Voices of Portland documents the history of Portland’s neighborhoods through oral histories conducted in the mid 1970s. Self-published by Christine Emenc with a CETA grant in 1976, the book presents a conversational and non-authoritative telling of changes in the city. Celebrate the reprinting of this out-of-print book with a panel discussion on Portland’s development, approaches to oral histories and ethnography.

The lecture will begin with Christine Ermenc (in person from CT just for this event!) in conversation with Chiron Studies Director Rozzell Medina. Original audio recordings from the book project, on loan from Oregon Historical Society, will be played. We will then open the conversation to Judith Mowry, Celeste Carey and Arlie Sommer, who will speak about their respective work with the Restorative Listening Project and Eliot Oral History Project.

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHIES
CHRISTINE ERMENC is Executive Director of the Windsor Historical Society, a hands-on learning center and research library in Windsor, CT. In 1976-77 she founded the Portland Neighborhood History Project, a city-wide oral history program. With the help of 10 project volunteers, she edited and produced Voices of Portland, a 100-page book based on project oral histories. Her previous work experience is in education and cultural programming, and she has worked for the Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford Architecture Conservancy and Strong Museum in Rochester, New York.

ROZZELL MEDINA is Coordinator and Committee Chair of the Chiron Studies program at Portland State University. In 2010 he co-organized Oral History Space, a temporary project celebrating oral histories from the back of a U-Haul truck. He is also a visual artist, writer and musician.

CELESTE CAREY is a Co-Founder of the Restorative Listening Project, a monthly forum that uses storytelling to create greater understanding of gentrification in N/ NE Portland. She currently works for the Office of Neighborhood Involvement as a Crime Prevention Program Coordinator, and has been active at KBOO-FM as a volunteer, organizer and programmer for nearly 23 years.

JUDITH MOWRY is also a Co-Founder of the Restorative Listening Project and works for the Office of Neighborhood Involvement specializing in Effective Engagement Solutions. She has been a facilitator and mediator for 25 years, working extensively on issues of racism and inclusion.

ARLIE SOMMER is currently finishing work on the Eliot Oral History Project, a program recording the histories of North Portland. She also collaborated on the Boise Voices Oral History Project and works for Oregon Public Broadcasting.

ABOUT THE PDX RE-PRINT LECTURE SERIES
PDX RE-PRINT is a series of four publications and free public lectures celebrating obscured and out-of-print books on Portland’s visual culture. Held at roving venues on last Thursdays at 7PM, lectures bring together authors, scholars, activists and community members, who will use the books to discuss how we understand our city. Each book will be reissued for sale by Publication Studio on the night of the lecture.

PDX RE-PRINT will bring authors, some who have not lived in Portland in the last 20-30 years, back to the city to examine the dramatic changes over the past three decades. Events will also highlight contemporary cultural workers who draw from these self-published pioneers. Together, the four books tell a story that can help us understand our past and fully appreciate the quality of life Portlanders enjoy today.
