Waste of Timelessness: Craft in the Present Tense
Saturday, January 29, 2 pm
The Lab at Museum of Contemporary Craft
724 NW Davis St.
Free for Museum members; $3 general admission
Is craft at its best when it is categorized as timeless, or should craft be understood as a reflection of the era in which it is made? In this CraftPerspectives Lecture, unorthodox crafter Garth Johnson will examine how trends in popular culture, fashion and style intersect with craft. Johnson notes, “As legendary cultural critic Heidi Klum says, ‘One minute you are in, and the next, you are out.'” Johnson’s lecture provides context for Era Messages, the exhibition he’s curated from works in the Museum’s collection.
Garth Johnson is a crafter, writer, and educator. He is the proprietor of Extreme Craft and author of 1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse: Remake, Restyle, Recycle, Renew and ReVision: Recycled Crafts for Earth-Friendly Living. Johnson received a BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and an MFA from Alfred University.
Garth will also be “in residence” in the exhibition galleries January 27 and 28 to discuss the exhibition with visitors.
