I can’t say that I liked the book, and I can’t say that I hated it, but it really left me unfulfilled afterwards. The technobabble got so much in the way of the interesting philosophical questions that were only hinted at. At first, I was hoping that, as often happens to me reading his novels, that I simply didn’t know where it was going, but the pieces would fall into place eventually. But they didn’t in this case. I already read the Jesus Incident, and I was really hoping that this would set it up and provide a more solid background, but I just feel like it feel short.

So, while I originally was looking for info that might help me feel better about the content of this novel, at least I found some company that shares my opinion! Thank you for some nicely encapsulating my feelings about this novel in your review. Up next for me is either Eye or The Lazarus Effect, not sure which…

I have to say that the tension in this book is probably its greatest attribute, it’s awkward and palpable in a very real way.

I’ve worked in a coal mine and the tension in a crew that is fighting together for the survival of the mine, and at times for our own lives, was present in the storyline.
