I especially liked this bit:”It seems to me that the ultimate enactment of the genre’s purpose is as a kind of subterfuge for academic freaks.”How true! Delany’s work exists in some bizarre No Man’s Land that often seems to have more of the logic of a dream (a dash of dragons, a touch of literature, a cup of race politics) to make something really unusual and often wonderful.I haven’t read The Einstein Intersection yet — now I can’t wait to get my hands (and eyes) on a copy!

If that’s the 1967 edition, there’s one copy for sale on Amazon for $49.95.http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000MKP1NO/ref=dp_olp_2

Delany for a period of this past year. I will be interested in what you think about Dhalgren when you get there, as the ties to “science fiction” become even more tenuous at that point. That other lit-dept. friendly SF author Philip K. Dick hated Dhalgren. I think it’s pretty good, if overambitious at times.
