he knows that this is bad, yet he poses for a photo anyway
by holly

I work at home most of the time. Henry, my cat, keeps me from talking to myself. He keeps me company in my studio, were he always gets into a lot of trouble. His thing lately is he will sit down on anything that I think is important just to show that he thinks it is important too. I have been making earrings lately, and jewelry designing is new favorite thing to help me with.

happy happy happy holidays
by holly
There is nothing like working in the world of retail to make you cynical about Christmas. My theory is that Christmas evolved into the retail mammoth that it is today because everything thrives in cycles. Christmas is that absolute apex of the retail cycle, it reaches this frenzy, say starting about today, where people shop liked crazed zombies. Should I complain? No, I should be chanting Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas!! Please come in and make the store a huge mess, and spend lots of money because I need to pay off things like this computer that I am typing on and our taxes from last year. In January my biggest worry will be keeping the dust off the merchandise.
The fascinating things that people do while christmas shopping
1. Buy more things for themselves than the people they are supposedly shopping for. Almost as self-absorbed, but not as bad, is buying things for people that they want for themselves. Wait, I will admit that I do this sometimes, this is ok if you are shopping for your best friends who generally want the same things that you do anyway...
2. Come in and just grab a bunch of stuff and buy it without really looking at it. I always think about things that I have made winding up under the tree and someone's aunt or niece opening it up and feigning excitement over it. Wow, handmade in Portland! You are so thoughtful! LOVE it! Then I imagine it ending up sitting in some thrift store somewhere.
3. Ask for you to gift wrap something. l-a-z-y. Sure, and can I sign the card for you too? Gift wrapping may be the only personalized touch that makes your gifts stand out. gift wrapping is fun! I have actually had people tell me that they CAN'T wrap a present. Something about not folding the sides up correctly. And that pesky tape! And honestly you need four hands to tie a bow.
You will receive an F in christmas if you can't cover a box in paper.
4. Shop while talking on their cell phone. "yeah, mom? I am here at Seaplane..S-E-A-P-L-A-N-E yeah it is a clothing store....I found what I want for christmas...........yeah, ok, I will put it on hold for you........... ............OK........OK..........................................................fine, Mom, gotta go.....I am getting another call.......you have to come get it by tomorrow.....you too, Mom.....BYE."
How is that cell phone technology is so great that they can put cameras and video recorders on phones, but they have not figured out a phone that can compensate for bad reception so that you didn't have to scream into your phone to have a conversation? I am not exactly sure where to draw the line on cell phone rudeness anyway. For example if you are in Fred Meyers, it is ok to call your boyfriend and ask him if you need milk, that is fine. But to make your cell phone your shopping companion in a small store, where I feel like I am interrupting you when I say hello when you walk in the door.....that is rude.
5. Let their children run amok. I am not a parent, so who I am I to judge really. Parenting is hard work. Sometimes it must be nice to go into a store and take a break from parenting. My only experience with children was being one along time ago. I remember going into stores, that weren't toy stores, and the motto was "DON'T TOUCH IT" There might have been an incentive to be good and patient while my parents where shopping, like that we might do something I wanted to after I proved myself by not losing my shit and embarrassing them. I could go off about what people let their children do. Parents actually expect ME to reprimand their kids when they are doing something shouldn't. "Um...excuse me, cute little three year old monster, but can you please stop kicking the displays and by the way, now you have to buy that wallet that you are chewing on because here at seaplane we sell things on consignment, and the person who made that isn't going to be happy about the bite marks you put in it."
Ironically Parents are too busy shopping for themselves, talking on their cell phones, asking me to wrap things too notice that their kids are grossly misbehaving just to get their attention.
Ok, my rant is over. I really like Christmas time, I really do. Merry Christmas everyone!!

SWAYZAK [London]
Matthew Dear [Detroit]
Portland General Electro {Portland]
DJ Brokenwindow [Portland]
[just after the fashion show]
"England's Swayzak and Detroit's Matthew Dear are techno producers at the
top of their field--their names enjoying almost peerless status in the
world's dance-club capitals. Swayzak is far and away the poppiest band of
the bunch, though it earned considerable snob-cred with the darker, more
minimal electronic sounds that made up its early discography. To hear the
band now--bubbling bass lines, crooning vocals--it's obvious that electronic
music has evolved. The house, techno and electro factions have ended a long
cold war, the resultant cross-pollinization giving rise to a mature
sensuality in electronic music--grooves that can wink while they bump.
Tonight will be a rare opportunity to experience the best of the minds
working this diplomacy you can dance to." -- Corban Lester/ WWeek
$12 advance / $15 at the door
Advance tickets at ozones, jackpots, insound.com and holocene
