Happy new year! Finally watched Midsommer, mostly so I could read this post, which was spot-on. I’d like to add (apologies for length): I thought the mention of bipolar disorder presented a useful frame for the movie. There are all these mirror images in the film, both literal and not, mostly between the two worlds, culminating in Pugh choosing someone to murder, and I thought it was really interesting how the sister’s actions at the start of the movie–killing herself and two older people–are echoed in Sweden, but that we sort of, as an audience, are told/meant to celebrate this crazy pagan multiple-murder but be horrified by the sister’s crime. It made me think of the way we often treat bipolar people in society, how we love/celebrate them as geniuses when manic (Sweden) but shun them when depressive (sister), even though both states exist in the same person, are often problematic/signs of serious trouble, and can lead to terrible results. The way that the movie coaxes us into celebrating and smiling with her after she supervises the final killing(s) was very successful and chilling. (I also thought the movie was making a point about the way movies manipulate audiences, but that’s something else.) Thanks for getting me to watch it!

Thanks for your thoughts. You should listen to The Haxan Cloak’s Excavation. I liked that album before the movie and was excited to hear his work on the soundtrack. It’s good on a gloomy day.

Dyson vacuums are amazing, I concur.

yessss I agree with all of this and need to watch again specifically to listen to the soundtrack! I will watch this guy’s movies forever. Have you seen The Lighthouse?? That also seems to require a hot take from you and Gary.
