Then he got a new wife, and he wanted a baby with her, so he had it reversed. But it still wasn’t working, so they had IVF. And a baby.
It was all very very expensive.
The doctor who did the reversal apparently said that he was going to require all vasectomy patients to give a sperm donation first, because so many of them come back couple years later.

I have one child, and my wife and I definitely don’t want any more, simple as that. The idea of having another kid is frankly terrifying. I love my son, but having another kid is something I cannot afford financially (or emotionally, honestly. Kids are stressful!). Plus, the low level background fear of pregnancy also makes sex less fun.

When I was living in Oregon and on the Oregon Health Plan, I took steps toward getting one, but then I moved out of the state before I could get it done. Now that I have insurance again, I’ll probably restart the process.

I’ve talked with some friends who have had them, and they all were happy they did it. Getting opinions from friends who had undergone the surgery really helped me make my decision. My one qualm is the possibility of chronic pain, which is not uncommon. But vasectomy reversal is an option if that happens.

Kevin Samsell has a horror story about his vasectomy, but he is apparently still glad he got one:

And here’s another article about a more normal vasectomy:

They inject a gel into the tubes and the gel damages all the sperms that pass thru. It’s reversible with another injection that flushes the stuff out. They did rabbit testing and are up to baboon testing (using European standards for the animal tests). A variant has been used on humans in India for a while and it works really well.

I know a few people who have gotten vasectomies, and they all seem OK. UrHo buddy Robby had one and blogged about it: http://urbanhonking.com/dome/tag/vasectomy/
