Magic Beans, Tragic Greens
by acdickson

Well, the Magic Beans auction Nate Preston listed has ended. Didn't go above $100. Oh well, we didn't pull off an international bidding frenzy this time.

Seems the office drones of America and beyond are too caught up in Mystery Mania. In the last few weeks they've driven the price of ...

a mystery envelope that probably has a bunch of coupons in it for $400.

A mystery box whose contents are determined by the amount of triva questions correctly answered by eBay memebers (okay, they get clever points) went for $800.

A mystery post office box went for $1500.

A mystery key that opens lord knows what shot up to just shy of $3000.

And a mystery piece of art work up over $10,000!

As we speak a mystery diaper that eBay seller mandy–poo (I'm not making this up) assures us the conents of which are worth 9 grand is up to about 9 grand with 4 days to go.

But fear not. This mystery mania will soon end. I've already heard through the eBay grapevine that most of these mystery auctions are fools gold. I mean, why would you put more than a few hundred dollars in a mystery wallet? If you say it's got somewhere between $500 and $5000 in it what idiot would put more than $500 in it? Yet invariably it will be bid up to $4999. See if you can't come up with a list of things 'worth' 9 grand that you could wrap in a diaper that are worth only a few grand or none at all. Right off the top of my head I'll tell you that most professional jewelers will appraise a piece of jewelry with a market value of $3000 for $9000. And I haven't even begun to put on my thinking hat. And I won't even bother. Becuase this whole something for nothing trend makes me sick and is thankfully on it's last legs.

And when it does finally die, Nate and I will be there with a good old fashion totally weird auction. And with you're help we'll make the cover of USA Today... the holy grail of eBay noteriety.

Stay tuned.

Dear Mr. Dickson,

This is the best title to a blog I have seen in a long, long time.

Well done. And good luck!
