Let's Ban Plastic Bags!
Posted by: kmikeym | From: April 9, 2007
Whenever I travel, especially to the south, I am shocked by how much styrofoam is used. It's crazy that you never see it here! (Crazy awesome!)
Sam Adams' is looking at doing the same to the plastic shopping bag, and I give a big thumbs up to that idea.
Here is Sam's blog about the idea. And here is a shorter update from BizJournals.
I'M TOTALLY DOWN FOR THIS!
You have to pay for your bags in Norway. Good plan.

there's some seriously fucked up, ignorant comments in Sam's comment thread. sometimes i forget that there's almost as many car-hugging, angry conservatives in portland as there are people on the other side of the political and social spectrum.

which leads me to think that if you hate public transportation and love freeways so much, and if you hate progressive politics in your city's government, why not move to a city with poor public transit, conservative government, and wide, congested roads? say, houston or atlanta?

Yeah those people are all threatening to move elsewhere, meanwhile we are getting a flood of incoming young urban professionals who want to live in a green city. It's a good thing.
Seriously, I know of a guy who is quitting Google (after he vests of course) and moving here from the bay area without a job just because he thinks Portland will avoid problems associated with the "upcoming petro-chemical collapse".

there's no way there's as many angry freeway-libertarians in pdx as there are people on the other side, otherwise they might win some elections or get more public support for their positions. they're just highly present on the internet, or to put it in their own terms, their supply greatly exceeds their demand.

my city, san francisco, just became the first in the states to ban these plastics.
i would like to see my previous city, lovely portland, be the next.... although they've got to hurry because los angeles is gunning for the same thing.
let's race to be smart for once!

Post a comment:

this blog is so awesome.
the only thing that is kind of lame is that there are not enough posts.
more posts = more awesome!
