The wifi is here, the wifi is here!
Portland's municipal wireless network is going live next Tuesday, December 5. At first, it will just cover downtown and portions of southeast Portland, but over the next 18 months, it will expand to cover nearly all of Portland.
I've been spotting this funny-looking hardware sprouting off traffic lights in southeast, and didn't make the connection til now -- they're the wireless antennas. Duh.
Metro-Fi and the City of Portland are holding a "wire-cutting" ceremony in Pioneer Square at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Bring your laptop!

Along with the laptops, remember to wear your "R.I.P. Personal Telco" shirts, too.

I read that microsoft was investing, or doing something with Portland's wifi thing...truth, false?

I wonder what the terms of service are. It would be cool if the personaltelco guys could take the MetroFi signal and repeat it out. They could help propagate the signal away from the traffic lights and out into the neighborhoods.

whoa, i don't think i ever realized that they intended to cover the whole city. i always thought it would just be a downtown thing. now i'm really psyched!
i'll be there on tuesday to vlog the wire-cutting.
