Portland's Library: Awesome

Posted by: kmikeym | From: November 17, 2006

I have a confession to make. I can't handle the public library. It's so easy to put books on hold and then when I'd go pick them up I'd also grab like ten other books, and before I knew it... LATE FINES. I was paying more in late fines than if I bought the books I was actually reading.

But at least now I know I'm not alone. The Multnomah County Library ranks No. 1 in annual circulation of books and materials among all public libraries nationwide. In 2005, library customers checked over 28 books for every person in Multnomah County. 13,000 people visit a Multnomah County library each day!

for about a year, judy was 367 out of 369 or something for The Omnivore's Dilemma. it finally got here and i was all "oh yeah gotta read that while it's here" and i turned around and it was GONE.

you have to stay on top of things and "renew all" on the webpage a lot. i pay maybe $5/month in late fees, but i totally get my money's worth.

If you have an e-mail address you check frequently, sign up for e-mail notification (http://www.multcolib.org/catalog/card/cardupdate.html) and the library will send you an e-mail a few days before your material becomes overdue, giving you a chance to renew or return before you get charged.

I love our library!!! It holds all those books, and retrieves them on demand! It emails me when they arrive! It lets me renew online! I can tell them what books I wish they would order and mostly they do! Best of all: Oxford English Dictionary--for free, y'all! (http://orpheus.multcolib.org/rpa/webauth.exe?rs=oed)

If you, like me, love the library, show them some love. (http://multcolib.org/about/mcl-support.html)

$19+ in late fees so far...the email reminders are very helpful, it just turns out I'm very forgetful.
