Wifi Starts to Get Awesome

Posted by: josh

antenna.jpgThe wifi is here, the wifi is here!

Portland's municipal wireless network is going live next Tuesday, December 5. At first, it will just cover downtown and portions of southeast Portland, but over the next 18 months, it will expand to cover nearly all of Portland.

I've been spotting this funny-looking hardware sprouting off traffic lights in southeast, and didn't make the connection til now -- they're the wireless antennas. Duh.

Metro-Fi and the City of Portland are holding a "wire-cutting" ceremony in Pioneer Square at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Bring your laptop!

The DeSoto Project

Posted by: kmikeym

Developer Jim Winkler is calling the renovation of the former Daisy Kingdom building 'the DeSoto project'. The Oregonian says it is "named after the car brand on the ghost sign on the building's south wall."

Will it be known as the DeSoto building when it's finished? I'd love to see that mural/sign restored.

The Oregonian article also says that Contemporary Crafts Museum & Gallery is planning on opening in the former Daisy Kingdom building in July 2007.

Portland's Library: Awesome

Posted by: kmikeym

I have a confession to make. I can't handle the public library. It's so easy to put books on hold and then when I'd go pick them up I'd also grab like ten other books, and before I knew it... LATE FINES. I was paying more in late fines than if I bought the books I was actually reading.

But at least now I know I'm not alone. The Multnomah County Library ranks No. 1 in annual circulation of books and materials among all public libraries nationwide. In 2005, library customers checked over 28 books for every person in Multnomah County. 13,000 people visit a Multnomah County library each day!

PDX: Number 1 Airport In America

Posted by: kmikeym

CNTraveler proclaims our own PDX the best U.S. airport in their Business Travel Awards:

"Years of costly renovations have paid off: Oregon's Portland International takes first prize among domestic airports, thanks to easy access (travelers can reach downtown in 38 minutes by rail, for less than $2 per person), an array of shops (including hometown favorites Nike and Powell Books), and free wireless Internet access throughout the main terminal."

I like how we didn't win the top in any category, but still came out on top. We're no one-trick-pony!

And a quick bonus, did you know that PDX has their own newsletter? Check out the PDXaminer.
