Wieden + Kennedy / Plazm present
Design Week Portland event.

David Carson
Never Snap2Guides

David Carson: typography rebel, revolutionary graphic designer, and legendary art director of the magazine “Ray Gun” will show what he’s been up to over the last couple years, and talk about the importance of not letting computers make design decisions.

Carson is a creative/art+design director with a long list of worldwide clients and awards. In 2014 he’ll receive the biggest award our industry gives for his contribution to the field of design. (but it’s a secret ’till January when they announce it). He’s a TED speaker, and was the main graphic designer on a Microsoft worldwide brand campaign, when he spent two months at Wieden+Kennedy. On Monday, October 7th he returns. Newsweek, before their end of print, said he “changed the public face of graphic design,” while Creative Review (UK) called him “the art director of the era.” David sez “whatever.” Come see and hear David’s show+tell.

Another secret: he’s hoping to find a creative design related job (+mentor some younger designers) in the Northwest where his family lives…

Featuring a live audio / visual set by E*Rock & Dane Overton.
Beer by Fort George Brewery.

A limited edition of Carson-designed W+K silkscreened posters will be available at the event.

$5 advance / $10 door
Order tickets via Eventbrite

Making Faces Screening Tonight http://urbanhonking.com/plazm/2011/10/29/making-faces-screening-tonight/ http://urbanhonking.com/plazm/2011/10/29/making-faces-screening-tonight/#respond Sat, 29 Oct 2011 23:40:12 +0000 http://urbanhonking.com/plazm/?p=22 Continue reading ]]> About ten years ago Plazm had the honor of doing a joint lecture with Jim Rimmer. Jim was a Vancouver, BC based artist and typographer. He had rooms and rooms filled with old type machines. He created limited edition artist books, made fonts in both digital and analog format, and, I found out during the presentation, designed the classic Heart logo. Jim passed away a few years ago but not before he worked to create the first simultaneous release of a digital and metal letterpress typeface. This is documented in a film screening tonight at the Museum of Contemporary Craft.

The film, Making Faces, by Richard Kegler documents the lost art of pantographic type making. It will be screened twice—at 7:00 and again at 9:00 pm, with a Q & A session with the filmmaker after each showing (doors open 30 minutes prior to each showing).

Here’s the poster that I designed for the Plazm / Jim Rimmer talk in Seattle.

Also tonight, our industrious friends over at wk12 and fashion buddha in collaboration with Oregon Ballet have created a dynamic typeface from dance. The font is called Ligne and is based on the physical movements of two Oregon Ballet dancers, Grace Shibley and Lucas Threefoot along with the work of choreographer Candace Bouchard. The dancers were fitted with LED lights, which captured their steps in real time as they danced all 26 letters of the alphabet. Motion-capture was used to record the movements and subsequently form the letters of Ligne.

You can download the typeface here: www.balletfont.com

Tonight from 6-8 pm in the lobby of the Portland Center Stage Armory, there will be a performance of the type ballet. Also live DJ sets from Let’s Go Outside and Mr. Ballistic.

I recently self-published a 32 page zine that covers the scope of Tokyo street graffiti to coincide with a lecture I did recently for the Artalking series of contemporary art gatherings in Tokyo.

The zine features an illustrated essay in English about Tokyo graffiti while simultaneously operating as a sort of “birdwatching guide” to help readers identify different graffiti writers’ work.

Liminal was printed in an edition of 125 and each is hand-numbered. You can pick one up for $12.00 postpaid (shipping included) via Paypal to ian(at)ianlynam.com or email me.

How often do you get to say something like that? Matthew Carter designed Carter Latin, his first wood type back in 2002 and it has taken this long for the Hamilton Wood Type Museum to manufacture it. The process was recently accelerated by increased sophistication in laser cutting technology. The big unveiling happens November 20-22 at the Wayzgoose Weekend, a gathering of wood type aficionados.

Firefox 3.5 is out now- go get that sucker!

The Mozilla Japan team asked that Craig Mod and I jointly write and design this demo page of what is now possible using Firefox’s new @font-face, a CSS rule implemented in Firefox’s latest 3.5 release which allows web designers to reference fonts not installed on end user machines.

(In other words: it allows web designers to store fonts on their server and reference them in CSS , regardless of what fonts the user browsing the page has installed.)

Look at it in Firefox- it is designed for that. It looks OK enough in Safari, but we’d rather have you see it in all its glory. Click around a bit and see what the future of typography for the web looks like….

We lucked out in getting Underware to agree to being our foundry partners in making this demo happen. The demo coincides with the release of their new typeface, Liza.

Original referring page on Mozilla’s site is here.

Thanks to Craig for dropping crazy hours with me on getting this project together. Shoutouts to Mozilla for their support, encouragement, and sheer radicalness!
