I’m no puppet purist and I’m not trying to say they all have to have studied puppetry in order to use puppets. I still think the production would have been stronger if they knew more about interesting ways to work with puppets. But: one person did know. So sorry for my generalization.

I was into it for about twenty minutes, and loved the look and feel of the show, loved the irreverent tone they set, mixing historical references with pop cultural ones and throwing candy out at the audience. But I soon tired of the one running gag/theme: that Lewis wants to fuck Clark, and Clark is a stoner. It was mildly funny the first time, when I thought they were setting the tone for knocking legends off pedestals. After a while I realized, no, they’re content to keep it there. I thought this was going to be some raunchy satire, and in the end it was more of a raunchy sitcom, and not even that raunchy. And while the puppets were well-made and the set was cool, they could have involved someone in the production who knew how to work with puppets and how to shape a solid performance. Maybe this will be their next step? I hope so, because this could be an excellent piece if they decided to trim the (extensive) fat and say something.

I’ve been so sick of the Lewis and Clark crap on OPB, Peter Cayote, it’s absolutely ridiculous, and I was looking forward to them turning it around. I really liked the look of the set and puppets but gawd, it was as if someone had handed 8th grade me the puppets and turned me loose. They did make me laugh but could have done so much more. There was a noticable attrition after the intermission so we clearly weren’t alone.
