The only way I can get through it is to promise the kids that even though they are leaving my class, I will always be their First Grade teacher, and they can always find me and hug me whenever they want. They know it’s true, because they’ve watched me hug scads of bigger kids all year who used to be in my class. Also, I wear a tiara, announce that I am really the Fairy Grade Princess, and tap them with my magic wand while saying “Second Grade!” This makes them officially no longer First Graders.
