The last day that I was in Montone happened to be the Festival of Corpus Domini, or the Infiorata. The day before everyone goes out and gathers flower petals, and then early sunday morning the streets are decorated. At midday a procession started from the church, winding through the town and ending up back at the church with all of the flowers trampled behind them. Children were dressed in costume, the town band was playing, incense swung, and I really never knew what exactly was being celebrated. Our friend Sergio put us to work collecting flowers and acacia leaves, and decorating the street nearest to the church and the convent, where I was lucky enough to see the nuns open their windows to hang up tapestries (they never leave or speak to anyone, and watched the festival through cracks in the shutters).
I took a lot of pictures, another post is forthcoming...
