An Accomplishment

Posted by: j_john | From: December 10, 2004

It finally happened. 16 years after I first entered the gates of the NES game "Castlevania" I have defeated the man at the top. The Count Dracula is dead!

Here's how amazingly anti-climatic it was:

Thanks to the awesomely comprehensive Video Game Museum for providing me with nice captured images.

Comments:

"You played the greatest role in this story"? Sounds like a bad Oscar acceptance speech.

"I couldn't have done this without the support and love of my family and my producer and my agent and my makeup artist and my key grip and my sunday school teacher and my manicurist and my colon therapist and that guy who found my puppy I lost, but most of all I want to thank Jebus. You really played the greatest role in my life's little story. "

How about "Holy shit, you kicked Dracula's ass. We all bow down in admiration, thou god among men."

There should *always* be a fun extra level after beating a game. Like where you get to run thru a level of cheering crowds and you are being celebrated by the townsfolk, and then a werewolf jumps out and starts eating somebody! SO YOU FLIP OUT AND KILL HIM NINJA STYLE, then you get the girl, the end! Bonus Levels make it feel like you earned something!

congrats, john. i forgot how awesomely underwhelming the end of this game is... the screencaps bring the memories flooding back.

YOU PLAYED THE GREATEST ROLE IN THIS GAME

were there other roles to play? did those roles get the better endings? why not just shorten it to

YOU PLAYED THIS GAME

ROCK ON, DRACO-KILLA

Thank you all for the comments. I truly feel like I've closed an important chapter in my life (much like finally seeing JAWS on the Universal Studios tram ride), now I can concentrate on the huge stack of games I still have yet to play.

True congrats, John.
That's awesome.
All NES games had really underwhelming results when you win. Most games do, really, but we do not play for the victory as much as we play for the struggle.

That game is soooo hard! Congrats! I could never come close to finishing it and broke many a NES controller in the attempt.

steve, not ALL games had "undwerhelming results" when beaten, excuse me. Remember the ending to Trojan? My brother and I would beat it every day after school for a week just to hear the awesome victory music! Plus it had great close ups at the end of all the fallen minibosses. I think the victory music makes or breaks tthe ending, sometimes they go with a sad sentimental number, and that works too because you're kind of sad that you're journey has come to an end.

john,

i am impressed. i've only beaten the game once myself, and it took a lot of frustration and sweaty palms. congratulations, it is indeed a milestone in ones video game life.
