Rocky Balboa vs. Clubber Lang

My new life is a strange one. It consists of frantically bustling around the hospital for 6 days a week, and then having one day where everything stops and i am left spinning, exhausted, not being able to think of what to do. What do normal people do when they have a day off? What did I used to do when I had a day off? Is there something I should be reading?

Today is my day off. Today is also President's Day. Is it a day for all presidents? Are we celebrating Bill Clinton and William Taft and that one guy with the giant mutton chops today? Or just Washington? Perhaps we only celebrate the presidents we like. I have never paid much attention to this holiday.

But today it has my attention because I got to not go to the hospital, for the first time in 7 days. Today i awoke in my nice bed, with The Admiral curled next to me, and I had the beautious wonderful luxury of looking at the clock and going back to sleep.

Yesterday morning I awoke on a cushioned window seat in the pediatric resident's lounge in Dornbecher hospital. It was 6:45. I had overslept. I was sleeping on a window seat in a lounge because there is no call room for medical students. There are no beds for us on this rotation. For that reason, we have been instructed by the clerkship director to go home at 10 pm. But that never happens. There is too much work to do. On my first night on call (my fist night of this rotation) i did go home. I left the hospital at 3:15 in the morning, slept for one hour, and then came back by 6:30. Riding my scooter through the freezing darkness that night, tears of exhaustion drying on my face, I decided that I would from then on scavenge for a place to sleep in the hospital instead of going home.

These experiences make me very grateful for little things, like not waking up to an alarm, like being outside when it is light out, like putting on jeans, like going for a walk in the woods, like watching Rocky III with my friend laresa late last night, and not worrying about having to get up the next day.

Rocky III, for those that are wondering, is not nearly as good as Rocky I or Rocky II. It is the first downward step in the precipitous decline that is the Rocky series. But you do get to see Sylvester Stallone and Mr. T punch eachother in the face, which is always a rewarding experience.

Rocky VI began filming in December. Does this make sense to anyone? Rocky VI?

I love "The precipitous decline that is the Rocky series." I have only seen Rocky 1, and was relatively unimpressed. But I do love Mr. T. I also pity and respect your lifestyle.

dear fiona-
yours is my first favorite urban honking weblog; I have only been skulking noisily hereabout for a year or so, so I don't know the earlier history of UrHo, but in my opinion (for whatever THAT is worth) whenever anybody says to a honky -that's what you guys like to be called, right?- "keep up the good work," yours is the among the best to whose standards they refer to adhering.ΒΆ

1) laundry and shopping, in my experience. Moving quickly to the less rhetorical: rocky six makes the same kind of sense as presidents day: once upon a time there was Lincoln's birthday, whilst upon a proximate but unquestionably distinct time there was also Washington's birthday. Sadly, many were the years during which neither of these well-worth-noting observances happened to occur on a monday -"the only day worth having off," apparently- so the two were fused together and renamed. It seems fairly likely that we have a more recent, shittier president to thank for thus obscuring some of the richly deserved polish on the repute of Presidents Lincoln & Washington while simultaneously ingratiating himself in the regard of the [sorry folks, but its true] ever-fatter & lazier American electorate (Reagan springs immediately to mind). I suspect this was the beginning of the whole "move it to a monday" thing. If you squint your eyes just right, you can see that this is the same process as movie franchises crapping out; note however that there is some slightly-greater-than-zero-percent chance that Rocky VI will actually be a really good movie. (spoiler warning: Rocky channels Muhammed Ali and ACTUALLY KILLS Mike Tyson).

The Admiral is a cat among cats. I took Chauncy to the vet today and he has to go on a diet. I'm going to call you later, like tomorrow, after I go to Woodbury Commons (outlet mall).

I am kind of drunk. I miss you!

Bring a small pillow and small blanket to get more out of your window experience. Something inconspicuous. I would be awfully tempted to bring my tiny Curious George pillow that my mom sewed for me, but it probably would be wise and my little dog would probably be upset at me :) I don't know if the calculator alarm will suffice.

For those brrrr cold scooter rides get a pair of gloves with "windstopper" or something equivalent.

Castillonis's awesome movie recommendation
"Night on Earth" by Jim Jarmusch
Five short stories involving taxi cab drivers
from around the world. NY city, Paris, Rome
especially good. You might skip the first LA
Winona Ryder story.

I just moved up to a Kymco People 150 and do not have to feel guilty about the horrendous emmisions from riding my People 50 two stroke (about 2%
synthetic oil mixed into gas) I also dont creep
up the hill at a maximum of 25 mph.

Ritchey, are you effing kidding me? Relatively unimpressed by Rocky I? Relative to what? Man landing on the moon? The worldwide impact of antiseptics? The sheer size of the universe? You are mistaken, my friend. Rocky I is a fantastic movie. It is shockingly well written (considering that it was written by Sly himself) and won 3 oscars in 1976. Good solid deep inspirational action-packed all-american movie. You must re-watch it immediately. All of you.

I need to re-watch Night on Earth, as I have forgotten how awesome it is (though I doubt is as awesome as Rocky.)

Thank you for your kind kind words, ro6, whoever you are (wouldn't it be funny if you were actually my mom?)

Fiona, you have an impressive amount of "Rocky" information at your fingertips!
