Face-eating Tumor!

| | Comments (172)

I have recently learned about a horrible cancer that has sky-rocketed to the top of the Diseases Not To Get list. Midline granuloma is a tumor (actually its a kind of T cell lymphoma) that starts in your nose and rapidly grows to completely devour your face. If not caught immediately, midline granuloma is invariably fatal within months, as the tumor blocks off your airway and eats into your mouth, sinuses, and orbits (eye sockets).

There is a horrible picture in one of the pathology textbooks of a poor lady with this disease. Its actually kind of a before and after shot. The first shot is her with a blackened, disfigured stump of a nose in the middle of a normal face. The next shot is of her, many months later, where her face basically doesn't exist anymore. It had been entirely replaced by a giant mass, and it appears that she no longer has eyes or a mouth. She died soon thereafter.

The other day, while contemplating this horrible disease, I decided that if I got this diagnosis, I would probably kill myself. I do not say this lightly. I consider suicide to be an acceptable response to a rapidly-approaching inevitable death, but usually only in the case of extreme pain and suffering (and even then its not an easy choice). But with a disease as disfiguring as a lethal face-eating tumor, I think I might want to end it at the early stages, just to save my loved ones from having to see it progress to the end stages.

I would take a nice vacation, throw a big party, and then surround myself with my famiy and closest friends and take a lethal dose of a sedative. God, I don't know. Maybe I couldn't.

Anyway, midline granuloma - don't get it.

Diseases Not to Get:
- midline granuloma (#1)
- Naegleria fowleri meningoencephalitis
- aplastic anemia
- metastatic melanoma

i watch discovery health all the time, and i was trying to research more about a program i saw the other night called face eating tumor. however, it was a different kind of face eating tumor that was something you would never want to have. i think you should check it out, you might be interested. go to www.dicovery.com/health and search for "face eating tumor" and see what times its playing, and if you wanted to do research on it, the disease is call gigantiform cementoma. i hope i could add something to your list!

Yes I also saw the show. I was actually fliping through channels when I saw it. A little boy name novemtree, who was only five years old had the disease. In the early stages of the disease, he looked absolutely terrible and in severe pain, but thanks to the doctors and organization that helped him and his family, he was given a new face, which looked absolutely fabulous. I hope he is doing well, and I actually pray for the boy and his family and others who might have or might have had the disease.

I saw the documentary tonight in England. What amazing people those tzuchi volunters are. And as for little Novemthree - what a brave little boy he is. I cried all the way through and when I saw him playing football with some other children at the end I was so happy I can't describe. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

I just watched the show today, twice. First in the afternoon, caught most of it and cried through most of it as well. When I returned from football, I watched a repeat of the show late of the evening. Cried again and was happy at the end until at the very end of the show TLC indicated that he passed away Sept 14/05. I wish I hadn't watched it again because the first time I didn't see that extra blurb they added to the end. I feel soo bad for the family right now. To have gone through everything..

I watched the program too on TLC last night and I was shocked and saddened to learn that after all he went through that baby died in September. I was happy though that his face looked far better and he had the eyesight in his right eye. He learned to walk and even played soccer...

My prayers are with his family. Especially his Father who was so patient and loving.

I just saw an episode on TLC yesterday that showed the surgery for the removal for this growth. It was pretty amazing how the surgeons were able to reconstruct the patient's face w/ part of the tumor because the tumor basically destroyed the underlying bone structure.

I saw Novemthree's story on Discovery Health Channel one or two days ago. It was very touching and I was amazed by the skill of the doctors, the patience of the father and Novemthree's own bravery. It was awful and shocking to know that he died after having suffered so long to get rid of the tumors. God give his soul peace, his family strength, and the doctors encouragement to change more people's lives for the better. My prayers are also with the organization that helped Novemthree...what a wonderful race of human beings we can be if we just want to.

Just wanted to share the experience I had with Novemthree and his family. I saw the program November 2004. I searched until I got a contact for this child. My husband and I starting sending gifts of toys, candy, clothing and many other items for the entire family. We also have been financially supporting the family. We correspond through mail with the family and I also have an e-mail address of a close friend of theirs. The family sent me a photograph taken after Novemthree's surgery of all 4 family members. It is on my desk. I truly loved this child and tried to make his life better. Novemthree needed more surgery and went to Taiwan for 1 month in July, he was however too sick to undergo such a risky surgery. His mother contacted me that he needed certain things in order to get healthy enough for surgery. I immediately sent money and 3 weeks later I was informed that he had died. We are in touch with the family and will remain so forever. If you would like to help this family with money or gifts, please contact me and I will tell you how. They are in extreme poverty.

After viewing the show on Discovery Health, I was saddened to read that Novemthree had passed away just this past September 14, 2005.
As I watched this episode I was glued to the television. After the episode ended I quickly came to my computer to find anymore information that I could about Novemthree. This is where I ended.
During the episode I was thanking God for giving man the wisdom to perform such tasks and too I was thanking God for my health! God is just so good! When I want to complain, I always try to remember that there is someone who is worser off than I am.
Throughout the entire ordeal, Novemthree seemed to be carefree. Thank God for his father who was by his side at all times. The times that I did see him crying I begin to pray and ask the Lord to help that baby.
Now to find out that Novemthree has passed and to have gone on with the Lord, his story, as we can see, is surely an inspiration to us who had the opportunity to share his life story. I am sure that he is shining brightly in God's garden and is at peace.

Tim said:

I cannot agree with the last post regarding God. I think He has rather a lot to answer for, Stephanie, and I for one do not see God as "good" having watched such a heart-rending show.

I too, saw the story of Novemthree on Discovery Health, last night. I was so inspired by the courage and good humor of this precious baby throughout his ordeal of the many surgeries. I was deeply saddened to learn that he lost his battle for life, after all he had been through. Novemthree touched me deeply and I took this little boy into my heart, and cried when I heard of his passing. It doesn't seem fair. He was so courageous and so sweet. My prayers go out to his family.

Stephanie said:

Tim, thank you for your opinion on my comment.

Like so many of you, after seeing Novemthree's story on TV, I had know more about his life and family. I also had to set extra time aside with my own children to simply love them like Novemthree's father did him.Last but not least, I had to praise God for the masterful way he used this small child to touch so many hearts around the world. What a blessing Novemthree has been to all of us. His loss surely brings sorrow to his family (and us!), but his undying testimony gives strength to hope and compassion. Two things this world needs more of. Novemthree now lives in God's amazing design in a perfect body in a perfect place. I almost lost my daughter to a split skull (resulted from an overlooked birth defect). Her brain was traumatized, and she endured pain, memory loss, and so much more. Why she, Novemthree, and so many others are chosen for such a role in God's plan is not for me to question. He gave us life, and he can take it away. I just praise God that Novemthree is alive and well with him now.

I too cried from start to finish watching this program about Novembtree. What a little trooper! He really makes you think about everything you have to be thankful for and how petty our problems are in comparison. I too wanted to send him some toys and his family some financial support. I was so very sad to see the final statement that he had died in September. Is Cindy's posting ligitimate? Does she have the family's real address? I would still like to send them a card to tell them how wonderful and brave their little boy was!

I am very sorry to tell everyone this, but Novemthree died about a year ago from resperitory failure, I belive it was associated with the pnumonia that he contracted through the tumor removal surgeries. Once again, I am very sorry to break this all to you. It crushed me when I found out

I just hope through his suffering others may live. He was sent to the world for a reason and perhaps his passing will bring us all a little closer together!

I so much appreciate Stephanie's message (Oct 7) of hope ... that Novembtree is now with God. I also appreciate Tim's view that God has some explaining to do. It is awesome that we have been given intelligence and liberty to choose freely what we believe and Who we will believe. Why does God allow this to happen to innocent children?? I think about this often as I have a young beautiful daughter who's life is threatened everyday by a terrible chronic illness. So I have to choose what to do about this. I find tremendous comfort knowing that my God tells me in His word, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son ..." John 3:16. Seek Him. I pray for comfort and peace for Novembree's family. I think about his father who was so faithful to his son. And certainly his mother too.

Mike said:

What a wonderful child Novemthree was, his spirit seemed filled with joy and he sought to blame no one for his condition. I ask God to ease his families suffering and grief and praise him for the chance to share in this wonderful story as heart breaking as it is.
Even in Novemthree's death there is inspiration. I believe many children around the world can be helped by our generosity and love. There are many worthy charities who support children in terrible conditions just like Novemthree, please don't miss this chance to improve anothers life through your support. God bless you all for caring for this child.

Todd said:

Novemthree's story is not one about Novemthree, but of looking at ourselves and those we love. I love my beautiful daughter and my two handsome sons. They are not beautiful, not handsome to anyone but my wife and I.

Novemthree was first a medical curiosity, then a tiny hero for making it through the surgeries, then a martyr by dying due to complications. He is one in six-and-a-half billion, and so are each of my children. They are my top values in this life, and Novemthree's journey is both a reminder and a warning that my own might experience similar difficulties. Will they be killed by natural causes or a drunk driver? Will they outlive me, or will I have to bury them? I don't know. I won't know until it happens.

Novemthree was both beautiful and gross. He was human, and an example of what it means to be a truly diverse human - one the vast majority of us will never experience, but can in a way appreciate. We could recognize he was human even before the first surgery. With more suregeries, he looked more "normal". It surprises me that he is being complimented for being a real trooper, when he was simply being a boy. He wanted to play when he wanted to play, and he threw a tantrum when he wasn't allowed to play. So do my boys. Humans do that. There is nothing super-natural about it.

I can understand the pain that the parents have been through. I don't deny them that. I wish for them to understand that Novemthree's tale will make me dearer to my children. I love them now, I will love them more. My children will not remember that I kissed them several times and cried over them while they slept. But I will.

I cannot help but make this sound like selfishness. I do not know the mind of anyone else; I am only trying to understand my own mind. Novemthree's death made me cry, but the reason was simple: I am not afflicted with the same disease and my wife and children are not. His mortality forced me to think of my children's mortality, and the thought of losing THEM, remote though it is tonight, made me cry.

Terri said:

My husband and I watched the TLC show about Novemthree last night. It was very difficult to see a human life go through so much pain and suffering. It was amazing to watch the skilled surgeons work together to give this child some quality of life. Their compassion and care was heart-warming and genuine. Novemthree's father was a hero in my eyes. He must have learnt so much about himself as a person. He was so loving and caring and compassionate and he was a source of strength for his son. It is touching to see that there are truly 'good' people in the world. My heart goes out to this family - for having to endure such a tragic event in their lives.

Novemthree was here for a reason .. maybe to teach doctors to perform similiar surgeries with a more educated view .. maybe it was to bring his family and community together to have a deeper understanding of how fragile life is ... or maybe it was to show the world that we should never take anything for granted and to count our blessings each and everyday.

I, for one, will never forget this story.

However after watching the documentary about Novemthree, I did talk to HIM. There are so many emotions going through me. Seeing Novemthree's father dote on him was beautiful. My 9 yr old daughter Macy & I happened to watch the documentary last night and it touched my daughter so much that she wanted to talk about it more when I got home from work today. She was really sad for Novemthree and his family.

I thought about changing the channel but when I saw the progress the caring doctors were making and how much everyone cared for him we couldn't turn away. We were so happy for the family and for Novemthree after his final surgery and I'm glad that he got to enjoy just being a kid for awhile before he passed away.

I wish we hadn't seen the message at the end of the show as well but it really reinforces how fragile and unpredictable life can be and how we should cherish every moment with our loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. May God bless them! We will not forget Novemthree!

I watched the TLC story about Novemtree this evening and was very saddened by the note at the end that Novemtree had succumbed to respiratory infection in September. I suppose this was a complete surprise to TLC as well because at the end of the story and before the announcement of his passing, I was eagerly awaiting good news of future improvements in his condition, as that is how he story ended.

Perhaps it would have been prudent to have kept Novemtree on antibiotics introveniously for six months or more as added assurance. My heart is heavy for the family.

I watched this documentary last night on TLC, and was also shocked when I read the disclaimer at the end with the sad news of little Novemthree's death. It was especially heart-breaking for me as I am the single father of a 4-year-old boy, and can imagine what the boy's father must have gone through. There seemed to be such a fierce determination to live in that tiny body, but at some point he must have just known that it was enough and that it was time to go. My heart and my sincere sympathies go out to the Siahann family. I will light a candle at mass this Sunday.

Im a very smart, and deep young person(16), and its hard to crack me, i rarely cry or feel as strong emotions as i did when i watched this. i had to tivo it. everytime i watch it, it gives me a boost in confidence. knowing there are still people out there this careing and genuine is so promising. after this im sure any more cases like this will have a much greater advantage after the knowledge learned in this one. But what i truely think should be done, is a movie. atleast they should have given more awareness of the show out on previews. the more people who would have seen this the more people are better off i feel. But a full length movie, i think would not only win awards, but inspire so many. think of it, titled "Novemthree", after the first week it would be all over the news. i guarantee it, and they could digitally create scenes of him, or use the real footage. adding parts in the beggining where hes made fun of, and deprived of friends by his village. and the end with the perfect ending, even the death as bad as it was is an up. to think instead of dying months or years earlier with nearly 3 extra pounds on his face and not being able to see, he lived years longer and got to enjoy so many wonderful things for the first time, he probably lived more in those days after the operation, then he did the entire part of his life before. I cant help but think of this being a perfect candidate for a "RADIO" like movie, but many more times inspiring.

I saw the Discovery Channel documentary on Novemthree for the second time last night and learned that he had passed away. The first time I watched it, the message did not appear at the end, so I was devastated to see it last night. He and his father were role models on how to live life with dignity. I feel sad that his life was ended so young, especially since he tried so hard to enjoy life, despite his huge challenges.

Hi I am a student in Dental Hygiene and I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of Novemthree with his tumor. I find it would be interesting to share with my classmates considering it was a tumor of cememtum which is a part of the tooth, and in my area of study.
Thank you.

What is with all this god and heaven jibberish? Was the family of Novemthree even of the same faith of you bible beaters? Chistianity is not so big in Asia. Is it too hard to imagine that this boy suffered his whole life and died and that is it?

My heart broke when this little boy died after having such a short life full of stuggles- but I didnt resort to the silly notion that he is 'up in heaven' . . .

I to was saddened by Noventhree's passing. I was impressed with the Tzu Chi's medical staff as well as the parents.

I contacted the Tzu Chi office in Singapore--from what they told me they can forward any mail, donations, etc. to the Siaahan family on Batam Island, Indonesia.

If you go to the Tzu Chi website, and use other languages, you can find all sorts of pictures of Noventhree. I even found pictures of his wake.

From what I could ascertain, Noventhree's tumors started to grow again (they couldn't be completely removed due to his age)and he had a lot of bouts of bacterium septiam (bacteria in the blood) which got into his lungs -- and, he couldn't recover. Despite his medical intervention, he was still a little boy living on an island with a large infant mortality rate and not the best of medical care. Keep in mind that Indonesia has had many severe natural disasters--like the tsunami that killed 150,000 people.

His family is a rarity, a Christian family, in a country that is 80% Muslim. Your thoughts and prayers would certainly be welcomed by the family.

All of these comments about blessing Novemthree and his family, and his doctors. . . but Novemthree died shortly after they filmed that show. So maybe there are no before and after pictures of the poor little guy becuase there was no after!

i did watched the documentary of novemtree yesterday on cable.
theres no words to describe the feelings.
Throughout the program i started to realise how everyone on earth is so lucky!
i did asked myself what did this little guy knew about life?
he was just 5 years old yet he had this tumour which everybody knows about.
i couldnt hold my tears, i just started crying like a kid.
While watching it was so good to see the surgeons taking out the tumour (big ups to our chinese compatriots for such an amazing job)
One part of it which made me laugh was when novemtree was in bed and he was pinpointing a surgeon to his father as if telling his father to scold the guy.lol
just before the end i started praying that novemtree leads a decent life like other kids but the screen showed up at the end with a message saying Novemthree`s tumour started to grow again.
He died

Don't understand, why can't the father bring Novemtree to Singapore to cure the fever. Singapore is just a ferry ride away.

God is with Novemtree now...

I saw the programme last nite at Discovery Channel "The Boy Who Has Tumour For A Face". I can't imagine for a 5 year old boy who has to carry the weight of his face for more than a kg!I cant imagine how suffering he was and he had to bear with that condition for almoz 5 years (I cried and I cried watching him suffering)!Novemtree was a great and a very tough boy. If i were him , I guess I could have died instantly.

I must give the salute and respect to the great Taiwanese surgeons and medical experts who did an impressive and astounding job on Novemtree's face!At least he could feel of having a normal face as a normal child before his last breath.

Again I feel sorry to his lost...but I guess God knows better for Novemtree. God bless him and his family.

You don't understand the situation of Indonesia.
His father had no money to bring him to Singapore...
If his father had money, Noventhree have been able to operate while his tumor was small...

I watched the documentary two days ago. He was one strong willed person to go through all the surgery and the pain. It really hurts to see a person suffer this way.

It couldn't be more sad to read the final message that flashed through the screen at the end. It's a real real pity. His dad and mum must have been devestated. :(

Did anyone know how many did he survive after the show till his unexpected death? Was it a directly implications to the ops or a recurrent of the disease or something else totally?

"All about NOVEMTHREE -
The Boy With A Tumour For A Face"

On March 7, 2004, Buddhist charity workers escorted a horrifically deformed little boy from his home on a small island in Indonesia. Previously denied any medical assistance because he was considered to be cursed by black magic, five-year-old Novemthree travelled to Taiwan for life-saving surgery. He left behind a community that turned its back on him, as well as certain death. At the charity hospital in Taiwan he finally received treatment for the rare disease, Gigantiform Cementoma - a disease that had stolen his childhood and was slowly and painfully taking his life. The Discovery Channel charts the emotional and medical journey from Novemthree's departure, through the cutting-edge surgical treatment, to his triumphant return to a home, family and future.

Novemthree Siahaan developed what has been called a colossal tumour on his face, which began before the age of two. Gigantiform Cementoma is believed to be caused by the abnormal growth of a tooth or teeth. Local doctors had neither the skill nor the facilities to treat the boy, and coming from a poor family it seemed unlikely that they could seek outside help. Novemthree's saviour arrived in the form of Dr. David Lui, a Buddhist missionary from the Tzu Chi Foundation. Dr Lui agreed to send Novemthree to Haulien in Taiwan to see a specialist who could attempt the extremely complicated process of removing the tumour. The Tzu Chi Foundation would fund this treatment and agreed to fund his ongoing treatment in the future.

The procedure was carried out over a 15-week period by a team of specialists headed by Dr. Cheng. The tumour was so large that it had compressed Novemthree's eyes and grown through the lower jaw to the point that the mandible had been destroyed. This meant that the surgeons could not fully remove the tumour. They would need to leave part of the tumour and reshape it to form the missing lower jaw. Before surgery could commence, Dr. Cheng was required to perform a tracheotomy to permit the child to breathe, as the tumour had all but blocked his windpipe.

The tumour was tackled in three stages, with several weeks in between to allow Novemthree to recover. Following the successful removal of the last of the tumour and reshaping of the jaw, Novemthree was left with a gaping hole for a mouth, as the tumour had so distorted and stretched the skin of his face. Plastic surgery was still required to reduce the size of the mouth. The procedure was immensely successful and Novemthree responded wonderfully.

Sadly, after the filming of BOY WITH A TUMOUR FOR A FACE, Novemthree passed away on September 14, 2005. The tumour had started to re-grow and surgeons decided further operations were too risky. He developed a respiratory problem from which he did not recover.

I just watched the TLC special Face Eating Tumor. I went from being so excited about the procedure to remove the tumor, and the amazing recovering of the young boy to being very sad and depressed. The end of the show leads you to believe the young boy will go on to live a normal life, but two seconds after the show ends a notice comes up letting you know he died shortly after. I wish we could have seen what would have happened as he grew older.

I have seen the show 3 or 4 times and only today did I see that Novemthree had died. I was so sad. It is now 2 in the morning in the US eastern time and I am typing to see if anyone has an address for the family or the man that was responsible for getting the child to Taiwan for the surgery. i would love to communicate to them and assist with their finances if at all possible. I felt as though I knew Novembtree and what a wonderful father he had. May God bless this entire family.

After watching the show last night I cannot quit thinking of Novembree. What a strong little boy that deserves another chance at life. I cannot beleive what courage and strength that he and his family had. The medical team was amazing and I just have so much faith and prayers to send to Novembree, his family and everyone involved. God bless them all.

i watched the show last night on discovery channel and am so saddened that he didn't get to enjoy the new look for too long. he deserved that second chance and he should have been able to live after all he had been through. i do agree that the surgical team was and is amazing and am in awe of what humans are capable of. rest in peace novemthree you have touched my life more than you know.

I think it was very cruel to show the documentary then at the end tell you Novembthree died last year. I watched it tonight on Discovery Channel and found it the most moving programme I've seen for years.

God bless the wee man and his family, the charity workers and those wonderful doctors and nurses.

I cry as I write this .. I cry with a broken heart with anger and sadness. What is all this nonsense about God and how he used this precious little innocent to touch all our hearts! .. this is rubbish! .. this precious little child was brought into this life to touch our hearts!??? .. he suffered throughout his short unbearable life for this??!! this amoral cruel disease stole his childhood from him .. he did nothing to deserve this! .. what could a little innocent do to deserve this?!! .. my life is worth nothing .. your life is worth nothing .. why do I say this? ..simple .. because clearly this little angel's life was worth nothing to nature .. it just forced him to endure this awfullness. For all you God loving ignorants .. the possibility is too awful for you to comprehend .. this little angel lived a short life in pain and died without having the chance of life that we all take for granted. Pity your selfish lives who think of nothing but materialism and wealth ..remember this boy .. his short life was worth more than all of us.

I am a 13 yearold girl who watched the show last night and was truly touched by Novemtree's courage. At the end of the show when I caught a glimpse of the notice that he had died I was truly upset and depressed. I cryed for a very long time. I don't understand how life could be so cruel and unfair to a young child such as novemtree. I asked myself why? why him? But I have very much hope that he is in a better place right now. maybe not heaven.....but something close. God Bless Novemtree and is family.

We watched the Novemtree story last night for the first time and were equally distressed that the little boy had lost his battle for life on earth after all that effort and dedicated medical work. However, I must point out that his short life was certainly a blessing, even in the midst of sure suffering. Five of my 6 children watched this last night and were boldly brought up to speed on the suffering of others. My children 10 years old down to 3 years old were deeply moved to realize that Novemtree's family lives very differently than they do here in USA and that there is something worse than the teasing they do to each other -- brutal shunning of a poor child for the tumors which errupted on his face. My children have been made to see several lessons of truth they needed to see. Also, the skill and steady hand of surgeons, the science of the medical approach to helping Novemtree (and others like him), the kindness of all who came together to get Novemtree to Taiwan - from missionary to medical team and the love of his dear father and mother, the watching of all this in the Discovery Health show has brought untold depth to the minds and souls of our family.
NO, this little child's life, albeit with suffering amidst the longed for smiles, was not in vain. It is a perversion to ever think that any of our lives are in vain or that any effort to help another is a waste.
God always has a plan and all of us are asked over and over to partake in it.
Let's not be angry at our Creator for they way things go, and then we can begin to find peace.

I watched the documentary on Novemthree on 24 September 2006 on the Discovery Channel in South Africa and I just cried throughout it all. I cried even more when I saw tears rolling from his eyes because he didn't like the sound of yet another operation, and when he laughs and when he looks at his himself in the photos. I'm even crying as I type this.
But I've never seen a child so calm and strong as he was through it all, esp. at 5 years old.
Novemthree, your heart and character is still with us and you will never be forgotten my little angel.

Me and my boyfriend watched the program and we were amazed on how well this little boy did with all the procedures he endured. We were so happy that he made it thru the operations. When we got pregnant we were going to name our son after him b/c of how brave he was. Our son put up a fight and we almost lost him at the end. We considered him a miracle baby. Every day we remember the day we wanted Novemthree story. I didn't know until coming to this sight that he had passed away. It deeply saddens me to hear that. i will always remember him and how he touched our hearts. God bless his family.
