It turns out I know all the lyrics to Paula Abdul's "Straight Up." It came on the radio last night and it was like my 6th grade music knowledge resurfaced all at once and I was able to faithfully sing every last nuance of that crappy song. I think we have a new karaoke winner. (On the back burner until Tom and I are at the same karaoke joint: "Opposites Attract." He, of course, would sing Mc Skat Kat's part.)

Here's an interesting trivia fact: approximately two out of every five people will not know who sings "I've Got My Mind Set On You." When you tell these same two people that it is George Harrison, they will not believe you, and a lot of emphatic reassertion will be needed, probably along with a Google search. I might have been one of those two people, but c'mon: who knew George Harrison put out such crap? I think as a child who grew up watching that video (mostly the ballerina one), it would make sense that that knowledge would reside in a separate part of my brain than Beatles knowledge. Although the entire Paula Abdul repertoire is probably sharing a space with that video. With my luck, when I get old and senile, those are the parts of my brain that will probably remain intact (encased in shiny lycra). I won't remember where I live or how to tie my shoes, but I'll totally be able to bust out "Cold Hearted Snake." Ooo, hopefully with choreography!

Max has learned a new trick. If we aren't paying enough attention to him when he needs it--say, at 2:00 am--he simply walks over to the clock radio and stomps around on it until he finds the button that makes it turn on. I do think this is a clever trick, because it turns two sleeping, immobile, non-attention-giving humans into two wide awake, fumbling, cursing humans who are now obligated to give some attention. I am mostly perplexed as to why this button exists in the first place. I believe it is the same button as the snooze button, but if you hit it when the radio is off, it works in reverse. And, as an added bonus, if you are sleep-addled and try to turn off the surprise blaring radio in the conventional way, you won't be able to. There's some trick to it that you can never remember. Who needs such a button? I'm perfectly happy with the tiny on/off switch on the side that is so far impervious to clumsy cat paws. Seriously, why can't Max use his super-genius cat skills for good?

LIZ! OMG! I sang "Straight Up" on American Idol Playstation Karaoke this weekend. AND I KICKED ITS ASSSSSSSS.

I also sang "More Than Words" and did really, really well. Sorry for all the horn tooting, but I rock pretty hard on random pop songs.

If you lived in Boston, or even near Boston, I would really hope you'd come to this with me next week:

And Tom probably won't remember this, but back in the CPC days we wanted to karaoke "I Got a Man" at that bar across the street but alas, they did not have it in the repetoire.

That is all.

George Harrison put out several succesful solo albums after the Beatles broke up. The albums were released around 1971-73.I guess this was before your time. He also had some success with the Traveling Wilbury's The sad part is they take the worst songs from these albums and make them number 1 hits. Got my mind set on you is another example of billboard's distorted view of what they consider a hit. There were at least 5 songs off that album that sounded much better than Got my mind set on you. If anyone other than Harrison recorded the song it would hardly see the light of day even on a little known radio station. The only thing that "Straight up" "Cold hearted snake" and "Got my mind set on you" have in common is that they made their debut on the music charts around the same time.Give Paula some credit. She has done a great job stalling the aging process. She was 24 when she recorded those songs in 1989 and doesnt look that much different in 2007. That is quite an accomlishment that you remember the lines of the entire song "Straight up" Liz if you ever decide to run a separate page on music trivia or the recording industry in general, I have some interesting input on that topic. There is alot more to BB than just CE.

Erica, Tom and Krista apparently did "My Humps," and I count that among one of my top regrets that I didn't get to see that performance.

BB, I don't know what about this post made you think I have any musical trivia knowledge. I think I'd get laughed off the internet. It sounds like something you should do, though!

in my opinion pretty much anything harrison sang on was crappy, even with the beatles (barring "wthin you and without you" of course).

your cat is a genius. but uses his gift for evil. i used to use that button all the time to fall asleep to dr. demento but not have the radio on all night.

Liz if you can remember those songs you just mentioned you have alot more musical trivia knowledge than you can imagine. As far as BB starting a music page? Wouldnt go over. I cater to a certain crowd . I spoiled them too much with food. . Sad to say they dont want to hear what BB has to say about any other topic besides CE. To respond to the last comment about Harrison, buy the CD "all things must pass". You might have a more positive opinion of his music after a listen
