A year older and a something something-er

| | Comments (12)

It is my birthday tomorrow and festivities are in the works. J and I bought several kinds of fancy cheeses, one of which is an "earthy" blue that would probably kill you (or completely cure every ailment in your body) in large doses. I am not a fan of blue cheese, but even I had to concede that there is something magical happening in those veins. There will also be a birthday cake, baked by my mom. It will be a yellow cake with raspberry mousse filling and vanilla frosting, because that is what a birthday cake should be. I understand that chocolate cake or chocolate frosting might be your thing, but it is not my thing. While I enjoy eating cakes of the chocolate variety, for my birthday only a yellow or white cake will suffice.

J is entirely disgusted by the non-chocolate cake. He can't imagine why someone would go through the trouble of baking something up and then leave out the sole reason for creating the cake in the first place. Like a vehicle with no passenger. I tried to explain that vanilla was an actual flavor and could stand alone, and he agreed that vanilla things could be good. But not for cake. Cake should categorically involve chocolate. I bought a large block of 70% chocolate for the cheese and fruit plate to help ease him through the party.

There is a soft pretzel competition in Miami tomorrow, and a French fry competition in Austin next week, and then more French fries in Long Beach. I'm no longer sure if I want to go to these competitions for the game or just to get some pleasant weather. I think I am done with the cold. Yes, I'm done.

I am considering forming a group of voters comprised of eaters, writers, and fans to form monthly or possibly weekly rankings of the eaters. The voting will work much like the coaches poll in the ncaa. Each voter simply lists their top 20 and sends it to me every voting period. I will then tally all the votes for each position and post it. If you are interested in being one of the voters please send me a message to indicate this. If you know anyone else interested that I may not have sent a message please have them contact me.

I have to agree with you: I like chocolate, sure, I mean, I don't freak out about it but I like me some good chocolate, but with cake or ice cream, leave the chocolate out. It's just too much, and I don't even want it.

You know what's good though? The Cook's Illustrated pineapple upside down cake. You cut up a fresh pineapple into chunks, caramelize it with sugar in a skillet, then put that in your pan and pour a very tender yellow cake on top of it. Delish! Let me know if you want the recipe and I can pass it on.

Liz, that sounds like heaven. Sheer heaven. I actually prefer vanilla cake.

Hmmm. When my time comes for your resolution challenge? It's gonna be real hard not to ask you to bake things...and then FedEx them. I won't do that, but know that I will be fighting the temptation like a champ.

Happy birthday, Liz!

(Also: J is wrong. You are right. Although Tom would definitely agree with J.)

Happy birthday! While I am an equal opportunity cake lover, for my birthday, I always want a white cake with white icing, but your cake sounds awesome.

Btw, the best chocolate cake and icing ever -- after much trial and error for Larry, who holds J's belief in birthday cakes -- is on the back of the Hershey's cocoa box. Seriously.

Happy birthday, Lady! I hope you caked it up but GOOD!

Your cake sounds fabulous (I believe in loving all cakes), but I'm in J's camp about chocolate cake being the Real Birthday Cake. My best friend doesn't like chocolate cake (I mean, doesn't LIKE. Can't. Compute.), and every year I remind her that I've made SUCH a huge concession for our friendship by allowing her to eat anything but chocolate cake on her birthday. And when she points out a weakness of mine? I simply say CAKE and she knows I have an 'out'.

Happy, happy!

I don't even need to tell you which side I am on Liz. In fact, I would take it even one step further and say, I don't understand why anyone would waste calories on ANY dessert that didn't contain chocolate...also, please don't ruin my chocolate dessert with fruit...that really pisses me off. :)
