PAROAT Alpha - SUCCESS!
We completed our first backup of PAROT Test Subject Greg Borenstein. There were some snags and lessons we learned, but I am happy to say that should Greg drop his laptop into the Willamette, we have a backup of his essential (and non-essential) files.
We have some homework to do before our first beta test, in which we will attempt to backup at least three people. We underestimated the time it would take to back-up, but part of that homework will be to gather the tools to make it run faster and smoother.
The goal is that we will be at a location for no more than 90 minutes.
We're also working on some stats. Such as, what is the gigabytes transferred per kilometer travelled? For the alpha run is was 44.15 GB transferred and 9254 feet travelled.
(also, what is the km version of the word "mileage"?)
We have been asked about money, and it's something we are still working on. The initial harddrive was provided by UrbanHonking, as PAROAT is an UrbanHonking-based project. But the eventual RAID with redundancy will cost more. This is not designed to be a profitable enterprise, but we have talked about accepting donations.
We have some pictures up on flickr.

I talked to someone who suggested a format for storing the backup: encrypted disk image. That way people can trust that you're not viewing their data. Plus it'll save a little disk space. The rumor on the street is that Carbon Copy Cloner can make them...
Also, the km version of "mileage" is "distance".
Mileage is rendered as "Kilometrage."
At least in Russian. But I'd bet it holds for French and English, too.

km/liter = 'fuel efficiency' or 'performance'
