Major Metros
I was watching the Apple Keynote and when Howard Shultz came on to talk about Starbucks he put up a slide, Most major metros by end of 2008.

I thought it was interesting to see what Starbucks thought of as a "Major Metro". There were a few cities on here that I didn't even recognize, so I looked them up.
Here are many of the western cities, and their populations (from wikipedia).
Seattle, WA - 3,263,497
Portland, OR - 2,337,565
Phoenix, AZ - 4,039,182
Las Vegas, NV - 1,777,539
Denver, CO - 2,408,750
Minneapolis, MN - 3,502,891
San Francisco, CA - 4,180,027
Sacremento, CA - 2,103,956
Reno, NV - 451,791
Fresno, CA - 1,002,284
Redding, CA - 181,401
Los Angeles, CA - 17,775,984
San Diego, CA - 2,941,454 (4,922,723)
Boise, ID - 635,450
Casper, WY - 66,533
Billings, MT - 185,578
Missoula, MT - 61,790
Bismarck, ND - 98,000
Albuquerque, NM - 816,811
I have never even heard of Casper, WY! With a metro population of 66,533 I don't feel especially bad about that. And yet, Starbucks considers Casper, WY to be a "major metro." Maybe I should check it out?

i honestly really love how insignificant we are on this map. though, i wish we weren't on it. you know, we only very recently got our first stand alone starbucks. and it's in east grand rapids - where american pie is meant to take place. so, take that how you will.
Also pertinent to the local scene:
By the same methods, the population counts for Vancouver and Victoria BC are 2.1 and 0.35 millions respectively.
With a metro poulation of 774,084 why isn't GR on this map? What is keeping Starbucks out?
casper, wyoming is where dick cheney is from.
