The purpose of the assignment was to get us out of the single floor of the single building at NYU where nearly all of our work takes place and the surrounding neighborhood where we spend most of our time. The M5 runs most of the length of Manhattan, passing through a huge variety of neighborhoods filled with a similar variety of people (as hopefully is captured somewhat in the essay).
We were supposed to record our observation in “5 pages”. Given the culture of the program, people take that in wildly different directions, from interactive mapping projects, to wordless photoessays, to letters to their mothers (all real examples). For my part, I tried to write a relatively traditional personal essay and then to augment that by showing some of the sketches that I made. Drawing is a part of pretty much every type of thinking/making process for me. It helps me focus on my surroundings and remember them more sharply. So, I thought it would be interesting to include some of the sketches with the essay. For me at least, they help evoke the scene I’m trying to describe.

Nice writing, captured the experience really well. But…what was the purpose of this assignment? Ride the bus and… write about it? Report? Draw? Blog? Why?
