I’ve addeda note about it to the original post.
Mathew — I felt a similar twinge when first buying NNW, but I didn’t mind dropping the cash to support an excellent (and indie at the time) Mac dev team that built an app I love and spend huge amounts of time in. NewsGator may have ads, but NNW itself doesn’t. For my use, at least, NewsGator would be a when-necessary supplement to desktop use of NNW as my primary reader.
I haven’t seen anything about a fully featured feed reader in Leopard beyond Safari’s paltry current abilites. Got a link?

I have never tried NetNewsWire because I don’t want to like it because it cost $30, which seems like a lot (There seems to be a lot of ads in newsgator.)

Not so! The m key toggles a post as read or unread.
Some other keyboard shortcuts:

The s key stars the current post.
The n key moves to the next post (without expanding it).
The p key moves to the previous post (again, without expansion).
The enter key toggles expansion.
The space bar moves to the next post and expands it.

I’m sure there are plenty of other keyboard shortcuts, but this are the ones I use all the time (which, probably on purpose, match pretty closely to the keyboard shortcuts in Thunderbird).

And you can mark an item as read in GReader (it’s between “Email” and “Edit tags” links at the bottom of the item section 🙂
