It’s an interesting study. I can see why the students would hate the posters they had to verbalize first and the other group still liked theirs after the three month period. First impressions mean that much. But, teaching art to students is a path of self-discovery. They either like it or they don’t. At least they were introduced to it. Plus, teaching art to students helps them understand how it works. If they choose a subject and want to create their own artwork, they have the techniques they need if they learned art first.
I think evaluation and the thought processes are important in any class, especially art. But, if we recall our college days. What did we do? We took the easy way out of anything. There was so much work to be done and so many grades to work towards that if you gave me an easy way to pass a class, I took it. Pick a poster and say, “I like it because it has so much color in it.” Then move on to my science class. Mission complete. Sure I didn’t put much thought into the artwork and I probably would have hated it too at the end of the 3 month period. Artwork I like at first impression will most likely always be my preference. But, too many factors skew this case study.
