In all my years of knife dorkery, I’ve only recently gotten into home sharpening with a whetstone (a gift from some of my dearest friends). It’s pretty damn easy to use, and really effective at keeping your blades sharp. It takes a little while to get the hang of it, but it’s all in the angle that you sharpen. If you don’t use a stone or steel properly you can definitely dull and/or depreciate your knives.
If you don’t have time or inclination, find yourself an awesome professional sharpener. It’s money well spent for sure.

Do you guys sharpen your own blades, or have someone do it with the machine? I’ve heard from numerous folks that those home sharpening rods ultimately dull the blade.
