Kiss the rings...

Feb 2009 - Dan Thompson
To consider: experiences of events seeming "unreal." While my mind halts before considering what is or isn't real, I understand the feeling of unreality and realness. But what could feel more real than the numbers? To count down: billions of peanuts contaminated with salmonella (possibly from rat shit), billions of dollars in bailout money, a million and a half or so Palestinians locked down in Gaza, thousands of secret torture and rendition memos left-over from the dark Bush years and still unreleased to the public, hundreds of prisoners waiting to be sent where in Guantanamo, hundreds of executives reporting they weren't the ones taking bonuses off the top of their bail-out $$, 5 photos up on the wall this month at Half and Half, and one individual took them all. The world is a welter of living stories. How does one make sense of it? I rely on the people I know and care for to teach me what it is to know and to care.

I don't know if these photos are cool--there is a warmth and compassion to them. We catch a signal of appreciation or maybe it's gratitude from photographer to subject similar to the generously contemplative eye of Minor White. Gratitude is funny. It's not that it feels out of fashion, but gratitude might be the axis on which a sense of human reality rides, the thread below styles that ties us to each other, and that observation may be out of fashion. The individuals photographed seem all to be in, if not dire than at least, serious straits. At the same time, there remains a feeling of unreality to the scene, a sense that we could be looking at a film still, recalling Jeff Wall's staged photos. The photos document the photographer's intentional accident of being in the right place at the right time to cross paths with an individual caught in the serious glamour of living.
