hello, again

One happy result of working all the time is when you find yourself with a window of free time, anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours, it is like a sliver of freedom, a luxurious stretch. After a long day on poor sleep I made the sound decision to not clean, or organize, or watch Days of Our Lives, or walk the dog (because it's raining) but to do something "good for me." I can't find my other sneaker, so the gym is out, and an unseasonably cold April afternoon is a good time to get back on the horse. Is it just me, or have my last several distant blog entries been about "getting back on the horse"?
Well, those were of course, false starts.

Running two businesses is hard. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Right now, it's a feat just to get through a day without fucking something up--forgetting to bring turkey to Half & Half, or ice to the Acorn, and letting another day go by without making proper inventory lists, which would improve everyone's lives. Sometimes I think we purposefully make our places run as inefficiently as humanly possible, because on some subconscious level we must hate order. Other times, on more successful days, I think our unconventional spaces say a lot of nice things about creativity and resourcefulness. All this introspection is so boring, I apologize! I'm attempting to convey the emotional atmosphere of running a business, and maybe that would explain why it's hard to want to get on the computer and relive your failures again. And another day goes by, and another, and pretty soon it's a month without an update of any kind. And this blog is supposed to be about LIFE AT HALF & HALF--I have to keep reminding myself of that!

Well, even though the Half & Half blog has been out of circulation for a little while, we've managed to make our presence felt in The Scene in the form of the new YACHT video (unreleased) and this great feature on Joel and Courier Coffee. We're selling crazy amounts of coffee these days, which feels really good because a) people seem to be enjoying Joel's coffee as much as us b) our investment in our new espresso machines paid off and c) I love to fill my bathtub with all the money we're making on coffee, and just bathe in it.

You should ask Joel how much he pays the farmers he buys coffee from.
