crazy looking footage of the view from the bluffs while i played @ catch that beat #45
captured by jordan dykstra, music by me, white rainbow
it is my understanding that this footage has not been effected in any way. the sun made the camera bug out and make the sensor in the camera mess up and create these beautiful green and blue hues
kenny galactic's been putting up rob vids on youtube

get it while its nice and rainy and cool
i woke up early to the sound of thunder crashing all around me and the wonderful emptiness and expansiveness of cool air after a brutally hot weekend. as the rain started to come down, i opened up youtube to check out this Jonas Brothers music. it was really shitty. i took source through the laptop built in mic close to the open window with me turning the sound on the youtube video on and off. the sound of rain through a compressor. things creaked and billowed from there. i'm putting up the whole thing instead of the snippets i've been doing for the other ones. this is basically how i work when i make music on the computer, just fuck around for a bit, see what happens, record the whole thing, cut it down or leave it as the sketch that it is.
as for the jonas brothers, i absolutely can not relate to it. and the rap at the end is terrible. wow.
there is a telephone pole on fire outside. the block is taped off and i can smell the smoke wafting through the window.

some white rainbow footage from the catch that beat #4/5 festival (last minute revised make shift maverick bluff afternoon evening show version), with sun in our faces
Bluff Beats from anja verdugo on Vimeo (W.R. footage at 2:40):
BLUFFS 2/CTB from smeadows on Vimeo:
I woke up in the communal house in Eugene a little crusty but still feeling pretty green. going only two hours away on your first night of tour is a real easy way to slip into things, and besides, i was telling myself, it was only a 10 day tour.
first, Dutch Brothers offee hut, Eugene.
second, Fred Meyer Eugene. i turned the van on and blasted lionel ritchey songs at the senior citizens on their hum-arounds.
third, white fang car blew a tire 30 miles north of Grants Pass. 8 men a jack and a spare.
so we rolled into grants pass
it was very hot
some went to a dairy queen
all went to the tire store.
then another Dutch Brothers. which was WAY cooler than the first one.
then we drove through the redwoods, and went swimming in the Smith River. 5pm, with the sun dropping into the trees
when we got out of the water there were little bugs on all of us that looked like miniature leeches.
the highway slowed to a stop due to forest fires.
i ate the smallest bit of weed cookie and got mildly stoned, but the terror of riding in the huge van on those tight little forest curves won out.
in astoria they had a BBQ going
there was a beautiful coastal haze.
it was refreshingly cool and damp.
fang played on the patio next to the grill.

people played with a frisbee until it was too dark to see, and a little after.
rob did mild donuts in the back yard

i played inside, in the living room, as did the straving weirdoes

afterward, some fell asleep in the car
others in the van
still others on the living room floor
i remember, before bed, stacking dishes in a big neat pile, calling that 'helping'
i spent a notably long time in the bathroom brushing my teeth.
and there those amazing asian sandwiches at that donut shop with the pizza.
in the morning white fang got stoned and left their guitar amp at the house.

and then later, further down the road
so its been about 5 days since we all got back from the white fang rob walmart white rainbow tour.
eugene
eugene was a dark and murky start, a semi-deserted dirty U of O affiliated co-op house next to another U of O freak scene co-op. these things were like frat houses gone Eugene-ian. The rob van was semi obscured by weird rocks, trees and shrubs. There were little parties all around. Everyone seemed extremely stoned and drunk. Basking in the isolation and bleakness of a summertime in a college town. I remember large trees lining the street. A million dilapidated couches and chairs on a long front porch leading to the door way. Like a gauntlet of weed and pabst cans. Cigarette butts. Signs that said "NO DRINKING OUTSIDE" being roundly ignored. A trap-door pully system made with bike parts to keep the front door shut. A dirty towel wedged in the flange to keep it from locking us all out. White Fang brought down a PA from the 70's. A young man down the alley played acoustic covers of Beatles songs with alarmingly good fake trumpet sound with his mouth from the moment we arrived until around 3 am. Every single leftist/radical political bumper sticker imaginable stuck to the two big sub zero fridges in the otherwise filthy communal kitchen. I played a dirty, feedback laden and pretty fucked up sounding set. I think I was tired and confused. I didn't look at the audience. Shit got pretty gnarly. I talked with the man who runs the Yume Bitsu myspace fan site about the history of Yume Bitsu. It fit too well into our collegiate surroundings. When he asked if Yume would ever get back together, it only took on look around the confused scene around us to say 'no' with full conviction. It's been 10 short years since i graduated from college, but there, in that place, it felt very, very far away. I suddenly and sharply felt old. I fell asleep on a couch in the common room while people laughed outside and stumbled inside to pee until the wee hours of the morning.
or something like this, but down a dirt road past some dirt pyramids.

THEN THERE WAS THE VIBE ZONE:
Here's a photo steve took of the 24 hour vibe zone we did last weekend... Boy was THAT long.....E*rock, Garrick (aka Stag Hare) and i spend much of friday night and saturday afternoon building this:

and then from 5pm saturday until 5pm sunday people gently popped in and popped out, jammed a bit, made some noise.
around 630pm Michael Hamilton and his partner Sara popped with french horns and bassoons and looper pedals. Brian Thackeray got in for a minute, as did Jason Buehler.....it was a cool scene. some kids came with their dad. Fox was running around too. Fun times.
830pm: Strategy's set was awesome 4 track cassette tape loops through various filters and delays. nice sounds,
10pm: there was a Dub-step night in the adjacent room that blasted us with bass for most of the evening (until around 230am) but Tom Greenwood took it and stride and just DJ'ed weird records and loops on top of it. E*rock added blasts.
1am Jordan played viola for a while after that, with some girls singing and whooping and playing flutes..
things got more confusing and vaporous and late night mushy. plus the dubstep bass kept it weird.
3am Gabe Mindell came over after the last Yellow Swans show on saturday night and jammed a bit with me and eric. a little while later we got some late night after-hours party people in there, but i don't know if our mellow ambient vibes suited their post-bar party vibes. or maybe it was perfect. i couldn't tell, i was really tired. I remember Kelvin and I making a loop out of him whistling, but it was mostly wind noise. At some point, Tom Blood approached the Dome. I played until i couldn't open my eyes or move my hands
430am Tom Blood and Andy Brown unexpected combo jam that went from around 430am until around 830am. then honey woke up and brought them some McDonalds breakfast...
i fell asleep around 730 until about 1pm sunday, in which time i think Tom and Eric and Andy finally lost steam and honey started jamming with no-one around.....
1pm sunday : Curtis brought over the Rob Van for early afternoon on sunday and proceeded to blast some crunk

3pm-ish sunday randomly, James Squeaky came and did a set. a refreshing dose of tape noise to clear the ambient pallet. nice.
then eric and honey and i jammed and finally started taking things apart around 430pm........the whole thing was pretty awesome.......
Garrick's Stag Hare project is something i cannot recommend highly enough. super deep chant/chimes/swells from downtown city life SLC hyphy. He was laying it down heavy off and on throughout the event. Such a kind dude. It was nice to meet him and hang out. I'm mastering his new record right now, and it will probably come out on A.Star (a little label his homies run as a collective)
some kids hitch-hiked all the way from Eugene to be there. They stayed up the entire time. Me, I crashed out of exhaustion around 7am Sunday and woke up and got back in the zone around 2pm for the last few hours of madness. All-in-all a fun, exhausting mellow zone. It was fun building the geo-dome. now if i ever end up going to that nasty cyber-tribal festival in the desert i will have both the dome building and the MIDI skills to impress all of the naked 'freaks'....
Next up: the White Rainbow, Tussle, Cluster show in SF that's coming up in a couple weeks.....
oh yeah, and did you see honey in the paper?
