Rock & Roll Pancake Breakfast Benefit, this weekend!

On Sunday, May 22, 2011, musicians Stephen Malkmus(of the band Pavement) and Rebecca Gates(of the Spinanes)will each perform sets at the Rock & Roll Pancake Breakfast Benefit for Dara Greenwald. The event will take place at Disjecta Interdisciplinary Art Center at 8371 N. Interstate Avenue. A pancake breakfast will be served beginning at 11:00am until 2:00pm, with musical performances beginning at noon. The cost of admission is a sliding scale fee of $8 – $100, with pancakes, coffee, and juice available for an additional $1 per item.
Dara Greenwald is an artist/activist based in New York City. Her internationally recognized videos, performances, writing, and curatorial projects critique capitalism and promote progressive social change. Greenwald visited Portland in February 2010, when the Pacific Northwest College of Art exhibited Signs of Change: Social Movement Cultures 1960s to Now, a broad survey of posters and other ephemera from international social movements co-curated by Greenwald and Josh MacPhee.

In July 2010, Greenwald was diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. While her health insurance covers part of the cost of her medical bills, she still needs to pay tens of thousands of dollars for her care. Artists, colleagues, and friends across the USA have been hosting fundraising events for Dara. Portland is the first city to host a Rock & Roll Pancake Breakfast Benefit. The Mercy Corps benefit organized by Zeb Andrews raised close to $1600 tonight. Thank you to everyone who donated art work, purchased pieces, participated and helped make this event a success! And thank you Zeb for making it all happen.
If you missed the First Thursday sale, there is still an opportunity to purchase photos and help the cause. Stop by FP3 at 724 SW Washington on Friday May 6 (until 5pm) or Saturday May 7 (until 3pm). You can purchase work right off the wall, pay cash or go to the Mercy Corps page and use a credit or debit card.

We are hosting our first ever First Thursday event at the downtown Fresh Pot on May 5. Zeb Andrews who works at Blue Moon Camera approached us about holding a one night only photography sale to help with relief efforts in Japan. All proceeds will go directly to Mercy Corps. Come by early to check out all of the awesome work, then come back between 6-9 to purchase. The work is priced between$20-80, all from local photographers. Come down to 724 SW Washington, it’s going to be great!
