TBA - Suicide kings
by joon
Well, wow, I have not written here since may! Wow, it seems long but it is not that long actually!
Well anyway,
since then, I have gone back to France, changed job and got happier ! How crazy!
I spent my whole month of August, organizing my back to school-work-project.
Four years ago, I came to Portland for the first time in my life, helping Adam moving here. I looked around for some theatre/performance/anything related to live performance
And I found TBA ! I went to a couple of shows and one dance workshop which was amazing.
Then, I moved here a year later!
I was looking forward to follow TBA. Weirdly enough, I have no memories of going to any of their shows for the first two years and I remember looking at the program last year and being like, eh, nothing seemed interesting to me. I don't know if that was a result of being broke at that time so I was not able to afford anything extra at this point.
WE just came back from Europe and we had hardly enough for rent, food and trimet.
This year, I do not have a job that will bring me a lot of money, but we will be fine, but what makes a difference is I have some time ! And as I was looking for their catalalogue I found "volunteer for TBA"
So I went for their information/sign up meeting and I got to sign up for hours.
With enough hours you get a pass/ 8 shows and other stuffs!
I volunteered so far for :
- Box office
- Chat
- Volunteers lead
- Larry Krone (The lab-craft)
I will volunteer for 4 more shows and help later on!
This is great!
I met new people
I learn new things
I get to be back into the world of professional art-live performance
The first show I have seen is by the suicide kings.
And this is one of the most powerful show I have seen for a long time!
Really really good
Three guys, one musician (cello) and a very few props!
Just them and their words - poetry - story - emotions!
It feels good to go to the theatre.
I missed it so much, I did not even know. I got to feel what I always feel everytime the audience lights turn off and the stage one turns on... I feel moved, I have buterfflies, I get thirsty for stories, my eyes are wide open to look at, listen to, a human being here in front of me telling his stories, I (almost) have tears...

Broken Flowers et Don Juan
by joon
Ah, Don Juan!
The last movie by Jim Jarmush "Broken Flowers" left me a little bit disappointed by the end but I am not sure that I hated it. It's just one of this kind of end who leaves you open mouth in your seat...what? it's the end....allright. mmhhh....I don't know....mmmh interesting....
What I can say against this end is that if you don't make a happy ending (thank you though) please, we need a change in the character's profile. here, he is the same though he went "through his past and he doesn't know what will be his future so here is the present!", well the past days is something, has a repercussion even if it's tiny but something. It's what I want to see, maybe not a huge smile or tears but something different between the first state of the character at the beginning of the movie and his state at the end. Something happened!
Otherwise, a lot of things are interesting like his neighbor, the ethiopian guy. Different social level, popular, believing in signs, telling him who he is like "don juan" this character is totallly a modern "sganarelle" like in Moliere's Don juan or anyway Don Juan's servant in any other master piece as the opera "Don Giovanni" for instance.
I like the reference to Lolita obviously.
I like this old Don Juan
It is funny how "Don Juan" was the play of Moliere that I hated so much and that it was this one that I had for my exams in 12th grade as the oral exam. the guy picked the subject that I hated so much!
Later, the subject came back several times in my life and last time was this project we wanted to make. A "street performance" about Don Juan, food and desire. well it seems weird said like that but we worked few months and we were counting on a festival in Brazil which has been cancelled so we kept that "under the elbow" as a french expression says and we worked on "street performance" about refugees! Totally different and both fascinating! In different ways of course. Well, this movie after all just remind me this project...
I miss creating and acting!
Go see it!

Harry...
by joon
Ok, most of you don't care and think it's probably dumb...but anyway, I don't care either of what people think or not! Harry potter arrived by mail today. ANd I was not waiting for it before at least three four days.
I can't wait. Well this one is shorter than the last one but you know, whatever.
Three years ago, I decided to read something in english and I also wanted to understand all this fuss about harry potter. I thought it was so weird! So I did both things. Read Harry Potter in english. Well, with all the magic vocabulary, I have to say it was rather difficult sometimes but I found that fun and decided to read the second one. I became addict with the third one and got totally crazy with the two following ones. Now, I am reading again the fifth one to be sure to understand the sixth one which just got out (And it's here !). And I am already thinking about the period of sadness and feeling of useless I will have to go over after that and even, worse, the last one. But I guess it's not before...three years maybe.
So from now, well, except if it's really urgent, I am reading! Have a good end of July guys!

Festival de Cannes 2005
by joon

Last Wednesday was the opening ...
And the out of competition category, I advice you a "cartoon" Kirikou, the one here is the second but the first one is a treasure of beauty "Kirikou". Otherwise, I like Emir Kusturica's work (the president of the festival this year) and I liked one movie I watched
from Amos Gitai. And I am very curious about the Jim Jarmush's film.
And Michael Haneke's, and others...oh, I love Festival de Cannes, even if sometimes you have the impression to always see the same people, it's also the occasion to say..."oh, I forgot about this guy, mmmhhh, what did he do?"

A great show to see.
by joon
Hereyou will find a link to this company who is in Portland. I have been going there two times already and it's incredible. The work of the actors is very good, rythm, body... I feel really close because one of the director has been study in Paris at the same school than I and it doesn't mean that we work the same but I understand some of the process of the creation better.
It's still possible to go until June 12th....
