I loved my easter day! / J'ai adore Paques!

Today, I went to a senegalese party for a name ceremony. It's the day you name your just born child. I guess it's muslim. Actually, we just hanged out, eat food, traditionnal food like "lach" or "lack", it's mil, cereal used for everything there. And "mechoui"... Actually, I had "mechoui" in France so that was not the first time totally.
That was great to be there. Everyone was wearing traditionnal clothes. I was listening them talking african politic in USA around french people on Easter during a muslim ceremony...
I was feeling so good. I like to be around things that I don't know very well and which are so different. I learn so much about us. Once again, I think "There are so many things different in this world that I don't know, that I will never know really but I can try, I can try to be closer and I can try to understand an other culture without giving my opinion. Just try to be here with my curiosity, and compassion, and open mind".
It's what I have tried to do everyday since I arrived here.
Not judging...not easy!
Today, I feel like my body is in Portland and my mind everywhere in the world!
Aujourd'hui, j'etais a une ceremonie de "don de nom" (je sais pas comment dire ca en francais). Je ne sais pas si c'est au senegal ou dans la religion musulmane qu'on fait, en fait les deux pour aujourd'hui. C'est une petite fete pour ton enfant nouveau-ne que tu nommes ce jour-la.
Alors voila j'etais au milieu de gens en costumes de leur pays, senegal, cote d'ivoire, et j'ai mange du "lach" ou "lack", un plat de mil traditionnel et du mouton...delicieux. Je les ai ecoute parler de politique africaine, ici aux etats unis avec des francais autour le jour de paques, lors d'une ceremonie musulmane. Pour moi, de mes yeux...c'etait excellent.
Et encore une fois, je me suis dit, qu'il y a tant de choses differentes au monde, qu'on ne connait pas mais qu'on juge vite, et je sais que je ne peux pas connaitre tout les differences et tout les varietes de cultures au monde mais au moins, je peux essayer, je peus essayer, d'approcher, essayer de connaitre sans comprendre je suis sure, sans juger...
Ca c'est difficile. J'essaie d'avoir de vivre comme ca deja en France, et encore plus depuis que je suis arrivee ici. Mais c'est pas tous les jours facile.
Aujourd'hui, mon corps est a Portland et mon coeur partout.

I realized it was easter this week thanks to the kids who told me ...He, we want to practice looking for eggs, can you hide those...and they show me tons of drawings of eggs.
Here a recipe for Easter...Eating lamb in France for Easter is a tradition. So here we go
J'ai realise que c'etait paques cette semaine quand des gamins sont venus me voir avec des tonnes d'oeufs en papier "Madame, on veut s'entrainer a chercher les oeufs, est ce que vous pouvez les cacher!" Bonj'en ai pas fait mais voila une recette de gigot d'agneau, c'est la tradition non, de manger du gigot pour Paques? Alors voila!

Le Japon...

My friend went to Japan two months with her husband and her son to visit her family. During two months I have been under tons of pictures in my mail box. Wonderful pictures. At a point I didn't want to open them anymore because I just want to go there so bad.
This one is one of the dozen I kept.

Visa...Attention!

VISA J-1
Jeudi, la responsable des visas de professeurs est venue rendre visite aux professeurs avec visa J-1.Eh elle m'a dit que je n'etais toujours pas enregistree dans le systeme comme etant valide. En gros je n'existe pas ici. Ce la ne me pose pas de problemes au quotidien. Mais quand je sors du pays et que je dois re-rentre, la ca peut devenir problematique. Mon visa est renouvelable trois ans, je devrais etre donc avoir un visa pour deux ans maintenant mais puisque je suis un fantome dans le systeme, peut etre que je peux avoir u visa de trois ans, non?
Je plaisante, je crois que ca me poserait plus de probleme si un jour ils trouvaient une anomalie...

Vous crevez d'envie d'aller me rendre visite aux Etats-Unis...Est ce que vous connaissez les nouvelles clauses...C'est ce que vous pensez! Attention a partir d'octobre 2005, et oui, vous devrez avoir un nouveau passeport ou un visa touristique!
Vous pensez, pas de probleme, mon passeport electronique, je l'ai, c'est le modele "delphine", oui je l'ai! Eh bien vous vous trompez, car dans six mois meme avec celui-la vous aurez besoin d'un visa. Ou de refaire un nouveau passeport, nouveau modele...avec donnees biometriques. Puce integree avec donnees biometriques: copie des empreintes, photo de la retine...une partie de plaisir.
Jusqu'a quand ils vont nous faire... avec leurs nouvelles clauses...aucune idee. Mais preparez vous a rentrer aux etats unis avec le sourire et sans arrogance car vous pouvez passer un moment pas tres agreable!
Je vous previens des choses a faire et comment se comporter mais que cela ne vous decourage pas de venir, une fois qu'on est arrive...c'est classe!

Thursday, the responsible of our visas came to my school to see us. She explained me that I am still not "valid" or "active" in the system. So I am not here. It doesn't give me any problem in my daily life, it's just if I have to go out of the country and come back which could be annoying! My visa is renewable for three years, but as my first year here doesn't count, maybe I could get a three years visa! I am kidding, I don't want that because I am sure it could be worse if one day they would find some irregularities...

You want to visit us here...great! Did you think about your passport? You probably know that you need a new passport or a visa? Yes, even if you stay less than three months. The visa cost more than the new passport ...but be careful, now they will ask a new new passport starting october, 26th 2005, yes a new one...with biometric chips like your retinas, I mean a picture of it, and your finger prints...mmmhhh, sounds nice, isn'it?
Also please, be nice at the border...
But please come to see me, as soon as you go throught all this, it's great overhere!

Tournoi des six nations...Rugby

Eh voila, nous avons battu les irlandais et battu les italiens maintenant il faut croiser les doigts!
Je voulais bien les voir les matchs parce que le pub irlandais (Kells) les retransmet en direct...mais si c'est en direct, ici il est entre 5.30 et 6.30 du mat alors bon euh desolee, je me leve meme pas a cette heure la pour aller au boulot alors bon... mais en tout cas le gars ici qui etait surpris qu'on soit bon au rugby, il peut aller se rhabiller....
And here we go, France is still in the running to win the "tournoi des six nations". We won today against Italia and last week against Ireland. If you are interested, you can watch the match in direct live at Kells pub. The only problem is that you need to be there around 5.30 am! so Euh, it's saturday, I can't do that and it sucks! But, what is important? WE WON! Who was surprised that France was good at rugby? Someone wants to talk to me now?

Seattle

Two weeks ago , we went to Seattle. We stayed at the Green Tortoise Hostel. We visited the Fish market, the odd store something with the mummies, the space needle (fucking expensive) and the music project I don't remember what museum (very good exhibit about bob dylan). We also took the monorail, are they kidding me? it sucks! you can do that by foot and at least you won't finish in a mall! On the second day, we went to fremont neighborhood and in the Gas park on the other side of the lake.
We almost did everything by foot, and so we actually saw a lot of the neighborhood.
Waht was weird in Seattle to me at the time we went there was the fog!
It came in few minutes, envelopping the top of the building and going away in few seconds a little bit later.
I would not like live there for the reason that that it is too big for me but I find it pleasant. One of the reason was that I was feeling in an european atmosphere on several places.
On the sunday morning, we went to "Le pichet". A french bistro. Oh my god, it is exactly like a french bistro. Boiled eggs on the bar...everything. I was happy and fell home. The thing is the waitress was a bitch. They were not nice at all...I fell like home!
One last word on the amtrak system...
1- good, we paid 1 round trip for two people thanks to a coupon in the chinook book.
2- The system is so old. I know that it is not the main way to travel here but come on. those two guys checking your ticket and giving seats on a piece of paper...
3- Good, the movie. 3.30 hours trip can be long. So don't forget to bring something to plug and you can watch a movie.
The thing is every 20 minutes, they had something to tell you but I don't know why they speak for ages. Like:
"Ladies and Gentleman, it's forbidden to smoke in the train...uuhh if you smoke...uuuhhh....tobacco or others substances...and uuhhwe catch you uuuhhhthis is forbidden. Don't smoke in the train...tobacco or other things...because if we catch you...be careful..."
Awkward... Ok ...we won't.
Also can they change the woman in the safety video?
Il y a deux semaines, nous sommes alles a Seattle en train. Nous avons visite le marche de poissons, bon y a de tout en fait. C'est genial car c'est un marche comme chez nous. On est alles au magasin de souvenirs avec les vraies momies dedans et les tetes reduites. C'et un mini musee dans le magasin...etrange.
On est monte en haut du"space needle", le truc le plus celebre de Seattle, impressionnant. Tres belle ville ave un phenomene meteorolique tres etrange ce jour la : Le brouillard arrive ne quelques minutes, tres tres epais, il enveloppe les grattes ciel et puis repart en quelques secondes! On a visite le musee "music project" quelque chose avec une tres bonne expo sur bob dylan.
On a visite un parc pres du lac, tres sympa et le quartier a cote est celui ou je voudrai habiter si je demenageai a Seattle. Chose qui ne se fera pas parce que c'est trop grand pour moi.
Mais ce que j'ai bien aime dans cette ville c'est cette petite sensation europeenne . Un je ne sais quoi d'europeen...
Et d'ailleurs, nous sommes alles prendre notre cafe du dimanche matin au bistro francais decouvert par hasard "Le pichet". Excellent ...exactement un bistro comme chez nous avec le bar en zinc, les oeufs sur le comptoir et tout et tout. Tu peux commander des "casse croutes" et d'autres trucs ...la serveuse etait agreable comme un bout de bois mais bon...francais c'est francais!!!
Sinon dernier mot sur Amtrak la compagnie de train...bon bah c'est pas le systeme de chez nous... Toujours en retard systeme un peu a l'ancienne. Il y a une video de securite comme dans les avions...ils prennent pas souvent le train donc bon ca fait peur je pense. Euh pendant le film (si tu prends tes ecouteurs tu peux regarder le film sinon c'est quatre dollars pour un casque), donc pendant le film ils peuvent annoncer leur truc un peu plus vite au lieu de te faire un discours de trente minutes sur le fait qu'il faut pas fumer , parce que attention si on vous attrape euh ca va mal aller, alors bon ne fumez pas , ni tabas ni d'autres trucs, hein parce que c'est interdit, on l'a deja dit, attention on pourait tres bien vous attraper at ca chaufferait pour votre matricule...voila bon ils sont un peu a cran mais ils faut les comprendre, le gouvernement leur a coupe les vivres bah oui faut bien recupere des sous quelque part!
enfin voila.... mais En tout cas Seattle, c'est sympa d'apres ce que j'ai pu voir en deux jours...
