pie hole

piehole1.jpg

Portland has an actual pie hole, a slot cut into the kitchen door of Dante's on W. Burnside. Through this hole you can purchase hot slices of pizza, and on a weekend night it is the perfect spot to see party people drive through red lights and haul ass down a one way street (the wrong way). Also I love to say pie hole. And offer it as a tourist destination. "Let's visit the pie hole, then get some doughnuts. It's just across the bridge!"

I was there under the auspices of the burnside review (see their rad blog here see their website I take photos for here) a lovely literary journal edited by my favorite poet sid miller. sid and a bunch of others from the burnside review read during the festival, very nice all around, though I didn't win the trip giveaway mentioned several posts ago.

what this picture is of. for reals, can't figure it out, but I like it. maybe it was inadvertently shot just before we jumped in the detroit athletic club's pool in our underpants?

which by the way dac guys, thanks for waiting till after we jumped in to kick us out. it was the perfect end to a very fun night. also I admire heartily your no cell phones/texting policy.

nov202.jpg

today is my birthday. looking back on the past year, it has been a gnarly rollercoaster. a big chunk was spent so full of joy, contentment and possibility, an even bigger chunk in profound sorrow, tumult, and loss, so much so that I start crying when I think of it. But embedded in my cynical self is a wide swath of optimism, which I wrap around myself like a blanket and hold onto tightly. Believing that the best is yet to come. Paying attention to the quiet sublime moments all around. Being thankful for my health, my family, my multitude of amazing friends, the wonderous life I've led up to now.

Today has been really nice, actually. I got a bunch of pictures back from the lab, ate a tasty tart at work, received many birthday wishes, and realized I'm coming up on 450 entries to this slog. Tonight promises even more fine entertainments.

miles buys me one of my biannual beers (laos excepted) at empty bottle

(edit - earlier I stated double door by gross mistake, for which I apologize, later that night we passed the dd and the door leading right to the stage was open, hopz and I discussed whether we should get up there and freestyle...maybe this is the source of my gaffe. in any case, the empty bottle is where I have seen many MANY shows, and spent innumerable glorious sundays shaking it with tightest friends at the late great Deadly Dragon Sound System (RIP))
