MONSOON THAI VIDEO-REVIEW

By from March 2, 2005

Thai-Monsoon.jpg

Welcome to the very-first video-review for Digest and my very-first review-review for Digest! I'm both honored and excited to be a contributing writer here and I hope to bring you only awesome content. I'm going to focus my reviews on vegan and vegan-friendly food, including candy... I grew up in a convenience store. I used to sleep on a cot in the soda stocking room. Anyway, welcome my first contribution!

Monsoon Thai is a, well, Thai restaurant located at 4236 N. Mississippi Ave. and can be reached by phone at 503-280-7087. This review features a cameo by my old friend Bobby Birdman whom is visiting Portland to work on his new album and sleep on my hardwood floor. If you don't already own it, make sure you pick up a copy of his States Rights Records debut, "Heart Caves."

Video-Review "Monsoon Thai" (11.5 MB MPEG-4 Video)

Note: The vomiting is entirely made-up for comedic effect. Please don't let this influence your dining at Monsoon Thai. Our meal was AMAZING!

Nice video work as usual, Jona.

I can't help but think they should change their name. You know, after that tsunami and all...seems weird.

Were you kidding when you said it felt like a thai place in a laundromat? Because that is the place that used to be Soup N Soap, which was a soul food place AND a laundromat. Josh and I had heard great things about it, especially for breakfast, so we went one time when we lived around there, but honestly it was terrible. I think Josh got these sausage patty things and maybe some gravy? That was really leaden and greasy. And the pancakes were that kind of tall yet tough, with not much flavor. Yuck. Sounds like Monsoon Thai is a step up. Do they use fish sauce in their stuff?

Yes, yes! It's still connected to a fully-functional laundromat. There isn't any sort of business connection; there aren't any washing machines in the place, but yeah.. it's in the same "complex" as a laundromat.

Don't get me/us wrong. THE FOOD WAS AWESOME.

I encourage everyone to get the Thai Pumpkin Red Curry!

I had terrific food at Monsoon Thai two days ago and while the decor is, as you say, rather sterile (give 'em a break, fellas - they're only a month or so old), the food was some of the best Thai I've had for the price and the service was terrific.

Your "Don't-get-us-wrong-we're-just-kidding" disclaimer aside, I think you guys do Monsoon Thai a real disservice, bordering on slander, with your faux-retching scene at the end. I'm not exactly sure what you feel this gag (pun intended) adds to your review, but I can assure you that it's neither clever nor funny (and it's certainly not flattering of the restaurant - which is rather contrary to the point of the entire review, n'est pas?).

I respectfully suggest that you re-edit your video review and shave off the last minute...after all, it's beneath you.

Hi Scott,

I think you're wrong, it is funny. Jona has a history of creating these little movies, and so you are seeing it out of context.

No one really thinks the puking is from the food. It's obviously fake. No worries!

I have seen a REAL video of Rob puking.
