Veganopolis

By kmikeym from January 23, 2005

Got an impromptu tour of Veganopolis when a friend and I walked by on Saturday. We had just eaten, but wanted to see the prices and menu and while checking the place out we were invited inside.

The place looks really nice inside and they are serving everything cafeteria style! You pick up your tray and slide it along while choosing what you want, just like in junior high. They are going to serve breakfast and then have grilled sandwiches and stuff for lunch. Plus they are serving Stumptown coffee (yay!). They have an upstairs balcony seating area and some better people watching spots on the ground floor. I'm super excited to check out the food when they open on Monday.

Bruce Conkle and Marne Lucas are in charge of curating the art shows their, and they bring a lot of credibility with them. The art should be far better than the typical Cup & Saucer fare. Too bad I've still never met a vegan meal that I've liked,

Chas, you gotta try Veggie House! That place is rad!

Where's that? I'm not a huge meat eater; it's just the vegan thing that kills me. What I really wish is that all vegan food was ugly, so I would never mistakenly pick up a vegan cookie again. (I call them trick-a-brother cookies, because they usually look so damn good). I needs my dairy! So where's the Veggie House? It would be good to take my wife somewhere where she has more than 2 dinner options. And on that note, can we start a petition to get The Farm to expand or change their menu, fer Pete's sake? That tofu and mashed potato dish is the bomb - the first 17 times....

It's vegetarianhouse.com (right off burnside), and I recommend H4, the "Bird's Nest". They have a full chinese menu with meat names, but none of it is meat. And even tho it's called "Vegetarian House" it's all vegan.

I'm a meat eater too, but i like vegetarian food. I too am a bit suspect of things labeled vegan, because of the carob cookie thing... but I prefer tofu in my thai food. Thai, another great veggie option!

but chas, many things ARE "vegan" without needing to be labeled that way. Bread, for example. Spaghetti. I bet you eat shitloads of stuff that's vegan. If it had "vegan" written by it would it taste any less delicious? Plus, you can't eat shitty carob cookies. Vegan baked goods are absolutely a no-no unless you're someplace really special like Counter Culture which no longer exists. I make lots of delicious vegan items that I'm sure you would enjoy. It's sad that you are inherently wary of the "vegan" label, when for me seeing the "vegan" label causes waves of pure joy to course through my entire body.

I think the label is VEGAN is usually only used on items that normally are NOT vegan. This allows vegans to enjoy foods they would normally skip, but it also teaches us non-vegan people that vegan food tastes like a lesser version of the food we like. This is unfortunate. If EVERYTHING that was vegan was labeled vegan, then this wouldn't be a problem. But the vegan label has become a sign of less taste...

This is depressing. Life is so much more fun with an open mind! Of course, it's not all good. You limit yourself, you miss out on the good stuff! Too bad for you.

Posted by Laura @ April 1, 2005 4:07 PM

PS - Anyone who needs extra support in the open mind department might want to try the chocolate chip cookies at Veganopolis (they're not a favorite of mine but my non-vegan coworkers really like them) or any of the scones or sweet rolls at Coffee Plant downtown on Washington or even the muffins or scones at Stumptown Coffee. I could go on and on, you get the idea! :)

What is depressing?

Posted by Mikey @ April 1, 2005 6:28 PM

Negative judgements about an entire group of people (or baked goods, as the case may be) based on a few limited experiences.

Hi! I was just surfing the net and stumbled on to your site. Thanks for the great tip on Veganopolis! My girlfriend's a vegetarian, and I'm always trying to find new and fun places to take her. Especially if they're affordable.

Cheers!

I love Veganopolis. The owners are so friendly -- and that's hard to come by in Portland. I love the roasted eggplant sandwich!
