So he didn’t send his son to war, but would his son have gone to war otherwise if he didn’t have the option? His son being 39 kind of changes the picture a little, in which I just throw a why.
As far as Israel-Palestine goes, I was talking about Hamas, which he specifically mentioned. The only thing I noticed in both debates is how much both parties pandered hard to the Israeli lobby to make sure that demographic was assured of our bi-partisan commitment to aggression in defense of Israel’s sovereignty, be it in the form of blocking Palestinian self-determination or striking Iran for the possibility of the inception of a nuclear arsenal despite Israel’s well-known one and far more dangerous one already existing in Dimona.
Agreed on your assessment of hizbollah, I don’t think Biden would, though.
While Obama might be a preferable alternative to McCain there are still some fairly disconcerting aspects of his campaign that should be brought into question even by his supporters. One, him enabling the passing of the bill that gave immunity to phone companies illegally wiretapping american citizens essentially aiding guantanamo’s perpetuation despite his rhetorical opposition to its abuses. Then one of the companies he gave immunity to ends up sponsoring the democratic convention with a private party for (upper) upper-eschelon democrats? There are also fundamental aspects of his economic policy that are just weird in light of his education background, better highlighted here –

Agreed, though, is that The Recession is a great album. I think My President is really good at illustrating the desperate factors of someone’s economic and class background that would make them pin all their hopes on a candidate like Obama, without actually endorsing Obama as that hope for change. I can’t tell if it’s subversive in that way or not, but it seems more realistic than the Big Boi Mary J. Blige effort, or the Will. I. Am. one.

His son, who by the way is 39 fucking years old, signed up by his own accord. I am not so cynical to think that any person, politician or otherwise, would not get genuinely choked up while talking about their son in a war after talking about his wife who was killed while said son was a baby. As for Israeli-Palestinian conflict/elections, I don’t believe that’s what he was talking about, I think he was saying we fucked up our support for Lebanon elections because Hizbollah won, but I’ll go back and re-watch. But if you want to split hairs, Hizbollah winning wasn’t necessarily a bad thing because they have supported Lebanon better than the government as far as taking care of the people, even tho they are armed and anti-Israel, and besides we’re kind of the reason Hizbollah exists in the first place. The only way you can get that deep into it in a mass media byte, however, is if you’re George Clooney reading lines.

Somehow him choking up about whether his son would return or not seems like a moot point and a hypocritical ploy for sympathy. He basically authorized both the war and the sending of his son to be a part of the taking away of a whole bunch of other father’s sons that aren’t considered legitimate because their names are jubara al bid’enak instead. What was up with Biden assuring everyone that he was better for the israeli-palestinian conflict because both he and obama opposed free and democratic elections in the palestinian territories because they knew the palestinians would elect a party not conducive to Israeli or U.S. interests? I mean, I know Palin’s ridiculous, but just because Biden has some rhetorical experience doesn’t mean his statements should come under less scrutiny.

With Couric, she didn’t even manage that.
Also, I overall agree with your assessment of Biden’s performance, but found his directness about “traditional” marriage dispiriting instead.

The number of questions Palin simply didn’t answer or understand was mind-boggling. Gwen and Joe were humoring her cluelessness throughout. I was shocked at how Geraldine Ferraro and other pundits thought she held her own. Give me a break. I’m afraid Palin’s condescending appeals to middle America may be all too effective. No one ever went broke (or lost the Presidency) underestimating the intelligence of the American people.
