i like cool kids, too (i interviewed them for VIBE!:
http://www.vibe.com/news/news_headlines/2007/10/cool_kids_profile/
) , but i see the point – i think one of the main problems with so-called “hipster rap” is that a lot of what is touted lyrically is sort of coming from this sheltered standpoint (i.e. ppl raised in suburbs glorifying glocks) , or promoting stuff that ppl wouldn’t tolerate from non-hipster rappers – for instance, spank rock is 9000 times nastier than even lil wayne, half the time… but I’ve had arguments with ppl who like spank rock who think non hipster rappers are misogynistic, which is a double standard rooted in culture at best, in race at worst. So I guess I would say that sometimes, worse than any hipster rap (most of which I like a lot, including kid sister, spank rock, cool kids and kanye west) are FANS of hipster rap. LOLzerz!!!

what is ironic about the cool kids. their music seems pretty sincere to me (if not their cool dude attire).
was it as equally as ironic/hipster to like tribe back in the day?
the concern is that this music is safer for the whiteys to like, right? that was the case with tribe, but tribe made good music. cool kids “black mags” is a pretty bumpin song to me.
people who like “real” hip hop don’t like this brand of hip hop? not hard enough? because it’s being sold to indie crowds? posturing? but hip hop is ALL about posturing.

I think that irony (esp concerning music) is the way that people get into things while keeping themselves safely at an arm’s distance until it is acceptable (safe) enough to put down their arm. That way they can know all about it the minute it becomes cool, but not be seen as a overzealous geek prior to that moment.
