         <title>Time Warner: Building Global Brands</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>For those not in the know: with its 1995 shareholders annual report Time Warner Inc. issued the now legendary proclamation that its properties (across multiple platforms from films to TV shows to music) were indeed "brands" to be designed, managed and distributed the world over. I was finally able to acquire a copy of this report and was surprised by the sheer poetry of it all. This management speak: a real waltz of terminology, the 1! 2! 3! of buzzwords sending the reader into a trance. So I reproduce some key sections for you now, below, without regard to the possible legal repercussions of doing so.</p>

<p>In particular, I would like to call attention to the remarkable use of repetition in what follows, a letter to the shareholders of Time Warner, Inc., dated March 16th, 1996 and signed by Gerald M. Levin, Chairman and CEO of the company. Unfortunately, a true appreciation of this repetition can only be achieved through a reading of this letter more or less in full.</p>

For Time Warner, 1995 was a year of important strategic achievements that will strengthen our growth prospects for years to come. Understandably, the agreement to acquire the remaining 80% of Turner Broadcasting received the most attention, but all our initiatives were important to Time Warner's future.  Thanks to our cable acquisitions, for example, we now have the best-clustered systems in many of the country's top markets.  We strengthened our balance sheet and simplified our operating structure by bringing our entertainment properties under one management.  With the decision by our international partners, ITOCHU and Toshiba, to become equity holders in Time Warner, we began restructuring our entertainment partnership. <br />
 <br />
The crowding of so many significant events into a single year shouldn't diminish a sense of their long-term impact.  Together, they will help bring superior return to shareholders.  But before we look at these events in more depth, we should also remember that amid the changes, some things stayed the same.  First and foremost, the immediate measure of our success continued to be found in the daily decisions of the millions of consumers around the world who turn to our brands and creative output for the best in entertainment and information. <br />

ANOTHER YEAR OF STRONG PERFORMANCE <br />

As a result, Time Warner had another year of outstanding operating performance.  Four of our businesses achieved records.  Excluding a one-time restructuring charge, Warner Music also posted a record year, its 12th in a row.  Three-Time Inc., Warner Bros. and Home Box Office (HBO)--turned in double-digit growth.  Cable returned to its traditional pattern of double-digit gains in the fourth quarter.  The revenue slump inflicted on cable by reregulation, which was a prime factor in the sluggish performance of our stock, is clearly over. <br />
 <br />
The year ahead promises to be a good one.  All our businesses are performing at or near the top of their industries.  Their combined operating performance should continue to generate very healthy growth. <br />

POSITIONING CABLE FOR THE FUTURE <br />

The completion of our cable mergers has had an important strategic result:  We have succeeded in our objective of building the country's best-clustered broadband operations.  Situated in some of the largest and most lucrative markets, our systems now pass 18 million homes, or close to 20% of the television homes in America, and total 11.7 million subscribers, the majority of whom are concentrated in 35 geographic clusters of 100,000 or more. <br />
 <br />
The passage of far-reaching telecommunications reform legislation opens an exciting range of competitive opportunities.  In order to ensure that cable can make the best use of these, as well as to help simplify our structure, we are working to put in place an enterprise that will be responsible for the overall management and financing of our cable and telecommunications properties. <br />

SIMPLIFICATION, FOCUS AND TEAMWORK <br />

When the impact of technological innovation and economic change is as seismic as it is today, unity of purpose and action--in a word, teamwork--is essential.  Putting together that team goes beyond changes in individual management positions.  It involves a commitment to simplifying our operations, seeing to it that they are as streamlined as we can possibly make them. <br />

We now look at Time Warner as operating in three zones, each embodying a specific culture of value creation:  Entertainment, News and Information, and Telecommunications.  This organization clarifies the unifying mission of Time Warner, rationalizes reporting responsibilities and opens the way to far greater cross-company cooperation. <br />

The most important impact of this change is in Entertainment.  By combining the studio and music assets under one superb management team, we have created an entertainment powerhouse that includes recorded music, film and television production, animation, home video, music publishing, The WB Network, theme parks, licensing and Warner Bros. Studio Stores.  This includes, of course, the worldwide packaging and distribution companies that are intrinsic to the performance and growth of these operations. <br />
 <br />
Each of our management teams has unsurpassed experience and expertise, as well as a proven track record of achievement.  These are leaders who know how to drive the growth of their businesses and increase the appeal of their branded franchises.  They will work closely for the overall success of our company and its shareholders. <br />

 STRENGTHENING OUR BALANCE SHEET <br />
 <br />
In addition to the steady rise of EBITDA, Time Warner's capacity to grow is built on the health of our balance sheet.  Our commitment to improve our financial strength and credit status resulted in 1995 in the sale of 1.6 billion worth of non-strategic assets.  We refinanced 4 billion of public debt, extending maturities and lowering the rates of interest we pay.  Managing our businesses with a focus on strengthening our balance sheet and enhancing our financial ratios is an ongoing priority. <br />
 <br />
OUR STRATEGIC CONSENSUS WITH TURNER <br />
 <br />
A big part of our original decision to invest in Turner was our admiration for the creative genius of its founder, Ted Turner.  Ted built a global media empire that combined branded entertainment and information with the ownership of cable networks.  Just as important, Ted developed strong relationships with cable operators like Time Warner, which carry these networks directly into consumers' homes. <br />
 <br />
As separate companies, Time Warner and Turner each recognizes the intimate connection between creativity and distribution--the contribution programming makes to the success of networks, and networks to expanding the audience for programming.  We both know that only when a company feels confident about recouping its costs by spreading them across several forms of distribution will it invest in developing quality programming on a regular, long-term basis. <br />
 <br />
The announced merger of Time Warner and Turner represents a strategic consensus.  We each start from the belief that the vitality of our journalistic and artistic enterprises is the wellspring of our strength. We are each committed to extending the leadership of our brands and driving their worldwide growth.  We each understand the necessity of linking creative enterprises to distribution in as many forms as possible, whether through theatrical exhibition, hard copy and merchandise, or across broadcast, satellite and cable networks. <br />
 <br />
A CYCLE OF ADDED VALUE <br />

Time Warner comprises the full continuum of communication--supporting and maintaining a culture of creativity; translating concepts into marketable products; distributing them globally, so it can reap the fullest possible return. <br />

The relationship that joins our creative enterprises, our distribution networks and our cable systems is what makes Time Warner not merely a collection of related businesses but a uniquely integrated media company. <br />
 <br />
Turner is a perfect fit with what we already have in place.  Our merger will allow us to grow together in ways neither of us could achieve as rapidly on our own. <br />
 <br />
Animation is a case in point.  Along with helping brand our theme parks and retail stores, the Looney Tunes characters in our cartoon library and the characters our animators add to it are an important part of putting The WB Network on the programming map.  The WB, in turn, offers another distribution outlet for our animators, increasing their audience and bringing added value to their creations.  The WB is also helped by its distribution on our cable systems, and the cable systems draw new subscribers when they can offer the kind of quality animation for which Warner Bros. is famous. <br />
 <br />

The market for television animation is--and will be--highly competitive. Yet here, as throughout our entertainment and news and information operations, it is the integration of our creative, distribution and cable capacities that generates a cycle of added value and steady growth in global revenues. <br />

LOOKING AHEAD <br />
 <br />
Storytelling is magic.  Any media company that loses sight of this truth--of the role of creativity and imagination--isn't going to be a global leader.  But bringing these stories to the world's audiences, and doing it profitably across the decades, is a business at which only a handful of companies has succeeded. And only one company does it with equal success in print, programming, film, video and music:  Time Warner. <br />
 <br />
The astounding multiplication of media and distribution channels is giving consumers an open-ended range of choices.  If a company wants to reap maximum benefit from this brave and burgeoning new world of consumer choice, it must have the creative genius to establish potent brand identities, the widest and best forms of distribution, and access to broadcast viewers, cable subscribers and computer users. No one can say with certainty what the final configuration of the media landscape will look like.  The process of transforming change will continue far into the future.          <title>The Story of Co-Brands</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>I was thinking that I probably ought to tell the story of co-brands over the past twenty or thirty years, and that the respective terms "proliferation" and "convergence" might serve such a story well. I made a general and more or less obvious observation: that brands have proliferated over the past twenty or thirty years. Once this observation was made, I could tell two basic stories to explain it, based on the two terms mentioned.</p>

<p>First, I might say that brands "proliferated" in the 1980s and 1990s, only to later "converge" through the practice of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobrands">co-branding</a>. This story has the benefit of explaining why co-branding emerged in the late 1990s and 2000s as an increasingly viable marketing strategy: to reduce brand clutter.</p>

<p>However, I could also point out that a great deal of brand "proliferation" in the 1980s and 1990s was in fact the result of single companies extending their product lines. For instance, the Coca-Cola Company has developed and introduced a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Coca-Cola_brands">mind boggling number of brands</a> both in the USA and globally over the past two decades. These brands have already "converged," more or less, under the Coca-Cola umbrella brand.</p>

<p>Co-branding, in this story, represents an attempt to "proliferate" these internally produced brands by extending them to other product categories. In other words, actual brand extension, rather than simply product line extension. This story has the benefit of also explaining why large corporations have begun seeking out co-brand partners.</p>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><img style="float: left; padding: 0px 10px 0px 0px" alt="topdownontologies.jpg" src="http://www.urbanhonking.com/cobranded/images/topdownontologies.jpg" width="300" height="300" /> Artist/science-fictionist Mary Mattingly envisions a future of branding in even the most desolate and isolated of places, including the tiny islet of <i>Loss Accountability of Top-Down Ontologies</i>, seen here. In reviews of Mattingly's work, which are collected <a href="http://www.marymattingly.com/html/secondnature19.html">here</a>, <a href="http://www.marymattingly.com/html/secondnature20.html">here</a> and <a href="http://www.marymattingly.com/html/secondnature21.html">here</a>, the CVS sign (among other branded components including plastic Banana Republic, Lexus, etc.-sponsored fruit trees) unflinchingly critique the inescapable ubiquity of the contemporary corporate brand. There seems to me to be another element of Mattingly's work: reliance on branded products and their consumption for survival. This might be a critique, but there is also something exciting about Mattingly's future-persons, with their full-home kits and their do-it-all electronics gadgets; many of these isolated future-persons are genuinely "cool" in the science-fictiony sense, and that seems to be a contradiction.</p>

<p>Which is not to say I would want to live in this particular future; only that there is an element of techno-cyborg-utopianism along with the more dystopian forecasting of increased brand reach. I think this in many ways sums up the conundrum of branding, if there is one: the love/hate relationship we all have with brands: the way we appropriate them to form our self-identity and yet are beholden to them when we choose to purchase "products."</p>

         <title>Brandweek: Best and Worst Brand Extensions of 2006</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>I have some thoughts on the <a href="http://www.brandweek.com/bw/search/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003495385">Best and Worst Brand Extensions</a> of 2006 as reported by <i>Brandweek</i> December 11th, 2006.</p>

<p>The <i>Brandweek</i> survey was sent out to 860 branding professionals in November, and those professionals responded with their thoughts. This is the second year <i>Brandweek</i> has sponsored a "best and worst," and I am intrigued by the nascent award-show-in-the-making. Will we one day have a nationally televised or otherwise widely publicized event to laud and lambast co-branded products? Only time will tell. Until that time, there are a few results that puzzle me.</p>

<p>For instance, the branding professionals panned <a href="http://www.biowillie.com/">Willie Nelson Biodiesel Fuel</a>. In the words of <i>Brandweek</i>'s Todd Wasserman, "Consumers may love Nelson's music, but would they trust their car's engine to the pot-smoking country music star?" I personally find this comment offensive. Does anyone else think this is weird? I mean, any moderate Nelson fan knows that the "pot-smoking country music star" has been supporting biofuel for years, in addition to a plethora of other environmental causes, and of course <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farm_Aid">Farm Aid</a>. Is it really such a stretch? The lack of enthusiasm for this particular brand extension speaks volumes to the dim-witted isolationism of branding professionals.</p>

<p>Moreover, they <i>were</i> excited about Snoop Dogg's new line of pet products. Why? A <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snoop_dogg#Endorsements_and_products">cursory Wikipedia search</a> turns up all kinds of Snoop-related paraphernalia, from gum to shoes to marijuana-flavored candy. But the branding professionals were especially enthusiastic about this latest brand extension, because it makes more sense to them. Though I admit there is an element of sense, it is certainly not any more "fitting" than Willie Nelson's foray into biofuel.</p>

<p>So I am left troubled by this <i>Brandweek</i> survey, and still processing. There seem to me to be some ideological implications behind the declaration of which brands "fit" together and which brands don't. The survey is a way for branding professionals to tell us fun little things about their world-view. Like that Willie Nelson is a "pot-smoking country music star," and this precludes his role as an environmental activist. The Snoop Dogg/pet products pairing sounds like an SNL sketch left on the cutting room floor. But so long as Snoop Dogg is making fun of himself, branding professionals will salute him. Only the most superficial connections seem to be acceptable, and certain "successful" combinations, such as the <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2006-10-24-maxim-usat_x.htm"><i>Maxim</i> magazine Steakhouse</a> and Budweiser Barbecue Sauce only really work if our standard is "stuff that men like."</p>

<p>There are many other ways one could go with analysis of these brand pairings, and especially with the public/professional reception (or rejection) of certain combinations. The response to brand extensions is like a window into the soul of our superficial society, and I for one am appalled by what I see.</p>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Fast food meets petroleum puddles once again in this <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/azzurra/">photo by Azure</a>. The red and yellow go nicely together, and it is as though hamburgers could be purchased by the liter. And also as though hamburgers were unleaded gasoline.</p>

         <title>Co-Branded: Taco Bell / Long John Silver&apos;s</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>Jona B. of <a href="http://www.teamyacht.com/">Young Americans Challenging High Technology</a> sent me a couple great shots of the Taco Bell/Long John Silver's sign in Hillsboro, OR. No fish tacos, but if you want a taco and also a fish, you are set.</p>

<p>The Les Schwab in the background is a nice touch, and the bare, wintry trees with foregrounded suburban hotrod give the scene a somewhat bleaker feeling than is usual.</p>

         <title>Co-Branded: USPS and eBay</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://research.berkeley.edu/haas_scholars/scholars/2006-2007/scholars/Garcia.html">Mai-Ling</a> of the Berkeley <a href="http://research.berkeley.edu/haas_scholars/">Haas Scholars</a> program recently brought the latest co-branded promotion of the USPS to my attention: a <a href="http://www.usps.com/communications/news/press/2006/pr06_041.pdf">partnership with eBay</a>.</p>

<p>The press release is, as always, a treasure trove of memorable quotes, including:</p>

<blockquote>The Priority Mail Shoebox is designed to meet the special needs of shippers in one of the fastest growing segments of the retail apparel industry--shoes.</blockquote>

<blockquote>"As eBay entrepreneurs know, in the highly competitive direct-to-consumer market, the low cost and up-front pricing of Priority Mail gives shippers who use this product a way to provide more value to their customers," said Anita Bizzotto, USPS Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President.</blockquote>

<p>And my favorite:</p>

<blockquote>Postal Service employees will demonstrate the eBay/USPS Integrated Shipping Solution option on the eBay website.</blockquote>

<p>The capitalization of "Shoebox" is interesting. Probably the name never appears except in full: "The Priority Mail Shoebox." As is the case with "eBay/USPS Integrated Shipping Solution." Huh?? That is the brand name of the the shipping option. Remarkable.</p>

<p>And the quote from Bizzotto is priceless. That classic PR brochure-speak. Sorry I don't have much else to say, except to deconstruct the press release. But well, it is pretty funny and weird, and you can look for those extra-special eBay/USPS boxes in the near future.</p>]]></description>
