Chartreuse!

Tim Davey and Kelley Swenson threw a Chartreuse dinner last night in the Starship Enterprise-esque back dining room of Ten 01. The whole thing was totally incredible and I don't have time to run through it all here, but two highlights included pork belly with creamed lentils, pancetta and truffled quail eggs (that last item sounds silly and unnecessary but was, in fact, completely mind-blowing) and just-released yellow Chartreuse VEP. Watch for more like this from Tim - this was the second in his new series of Portland spirit pairing dinners, the first being last month's amazing rye dinner at the Ace Cleaners. Portland is incredible. We live like queens.

Delicata Squash

I cut it in half. I scooped it out. Then I baked it in a covered casserole at 400 for like 30 or 40 minutes. I did not season, salt or oil it, or anything. When it was almost done I took off the lid and the water evaporated off.

OMG, AMAZING. Sweet like candy.

Top 5 Drinks I'm Currently Geeking Out On

1. Corzo tequila. I had this at Rontoms. I think it was the reposado. Insanely flavorful and smooth. Great sipping tequila. Tequila might be replacing bourbon as my favorite sipping spirit.

2. B & B. Yummy herbal Benedictine pre-mixed with cognac. So warming. Classy or trashy? Who cares?

3. Batdorf & Bronson Ethiopia Natural Limu. Rich flavor, sexy viscosity. As if my job wasn't already awesome enough, Batdorf is our office coffee.

4. Portland Rock Bottom Blitzen (trippel-style seasonal). Banana in a glass. Most people I know would never consider hanging out at this corporate downtown bar, seemingly populated by young office-types freshly released from the frat. But you probably didn't know that the head brewer, Van Havig, heads up the Oregon Brewers Guild and totally knows his stuff. I still don't really want to hang out there, but his beer F-ing rules.

5. Old Peculiar brown ale. I made beef stew with this. Amazing. I really love brown ale. It's flavorful but still light. From La Bodega on Fremont.

Dude, I am like so obsessed with squash right now. It is so delicious and cheap. I got an acorn squash for 50 cents. I halved it. I saved half for later. I took the other half, scooped out the seeds, and toasted them with salt. Then I took the half a squash and sliced it, and roasted it with cumin, salt, and a little oil. Then I drizzled molasses on it. Then I ate it.

My absolute favorite things right now are these leg warmers I got from teamestrogen.com. They are fleecy, windproof, and semi-waterproof. Super cozy. Also, since the company is based near Portland (Hillsboro?) they arrived the day after I ordered them.

The sad thing is, I just got these, and a base layer, and a long-sleeved jersey, and I am only like half done with gearing up for winter. I feel like such a yuppie! Good thing I don't have any kids to send to college!

Bike Commute Challenge

My company, Imbibe Magazine, took part in Portland's Bike Commute Challenge during the month of September. When I started I was the token quirky bike commuter, but I'm happy to report that I've roped my coworker Siobhan into sharing that role with me - and we make up half the office staff, so not so quirky now! She had been considering bike commuting but was discouraged because she had to lug a bunch of crap to and from the office, post office, etc.. I brought her a pair of panniers I had that I wasn't using, and that was apparently the missing link because now she is commuting by bike, 30 minutes each way from North Portland, at least once or twice a week.

I am totally impressed, not just by Siobhan, but by the demonstration that often the factors that influence our decisions are actually quite small. I started running (and hence began my irreversible plummet into excercise geekdom) when a friend who worked at Adidas gave me some free shoes. Once I finally bought a couch, I started reading and studying more. You know how it is - waffling about buying something, not knowing if you can justify the extra expense, putting it off. Well, I just want to say, if you've been on the fence about shelling out for that new rain jacket, or gym membership, or dance classes, or chef's knife, or upgrading from your Schwinn Varsity, or whatever, you should probably just go buy it, because it might make a disproportionately big difference in your day-to-day life.

Ode to SF, Bianca and Michelle Tea

I was reading Valencia by Michelle Tea tonight and the parts about living in the Gay Area in the 90s and being part of this unspecific progressive, creative subculture, and acting dumb and young, it reminded me of days and years of my life that I never ever think about, had forgotten I had lived, that seem like lifetimes ago. I forget that there are all these experiences and intentions that have been part of me that happened before I moved to Portland. I didn't do anything super crazy, just high school, but still. Those were heady times, as they say. Fucked up and lame and unfulfilled, but still intense in the way that adolescence is.

I think maybe I've been thinking about the past too because it's fall, and grey, and muted and cozy and melancholy, and it reminds me of every other September of my entire life. The one when I started sixth grade and liked the Beatles and thought I was finally going to fall in love. The one when I hung out with Reed girls who were younger than me and broke my collarbone and made zines. The one with the burning buildings when I dug myself into a hole and worked at Meier & Frank. The one last year when I wore cheap perfume and looked out the window of my shoddy studio at the Portland skyline and went out in my motorcycle boots. The one when I was in France. The one when I was in high school and trying to be goth yet also thinking it was hilarious, creeping around with my best friend Bianca (who made a way better goth) and getting candy from the 7-11. Or the one when I took a life drawing class and worked at this stupid bakery cafe with crazy stoners who drove me insane. It's not like I'm all, "Oh, Let's See, 1996, What Was I Doing," and search for it. I just feel the air and see the light when it's like this and everything washes over me.

Sunday

I had a great moment today. I stopped at Beulahland and got a particularly tasty coffee with whole milk and honey. Since I am unable to multitask while riding my bike, I was walking my bike down Sandy drinking the coffee, and the coffee was extra delicious, and I was wearing my most favorite green t-shirt ever, and the afternoon was especially grey and fall-like, yet still warm enough to be comfortable, and I had that cliche but awesome feeling you get when you're drinking a good cup of coffee, that everything in the world is just great. Then I met my friends and got a pedicure.
