Tuna Patties
by shoshanna

I completely botched dinner tonight, which was really demoralizing for some reason. Perhaps because it was tuna patties, and it's really hard to screw those up. I made the mistake of trying to cook them in oil instead of butter, plus the further mistake of assuming garlic salt wouldn't be as salty as normal salt (I assure you, it's salty). We didn't even have any macaroni and cheese in a box to go on the side, so I made these gnocchi from trader joe's, which turned out really mushy and gluey. I had just been thinking, when I was on the bus this morning, about how much I hate gluey food, but love using the word "gluey" to describe bad food. I'm trying to remember what gluey food prompted that train of thought, but nothing comes to mind. Anyway, the moral of the story is to always be sure to have macaroni and cheese in the house, and to not oversalt your tuna patties and always fry them in hella butter. My mom showed me how to make them.

HOW TO MAKE TUNA PATTIES
1. combine a can of tuna and an egg in a bowl. salt and pepper LIGHTLY.
2. heat hella butter in a pan over medium-high heat. make little pancakes with the tuna mixture. fry on both sides.
3. serve with kraft macaroni and cheese. healthy living option: also serve with steamed brocolli on the side. make sure it isn't touching.

Chocolate
by shoshanna

Just when I am berating myself for being too literal-minded, I get another comment on THIS POST, and it makes me laugh and feel smart. In honor of how great chocolate is, a quick poll: What is your favorite form of chocolate? You all know mine already.

Pancakes
by shoshanna

I made pancakes with Bob's Red Mill 10-grain pancake mix. They were pretty good. I also made "mock risotto" from Eating Well magazine. It was also pretty good. It had instant brown rice in it. I didn't know you could get instant brown rice. Makes more sense than instant white rice. It was OK but I wish it was short-grain brown rice, which for some reason is infinitely better than long-grain brown rice. I don't know why. I really, really like short-grain rice.

Like a car accident
by shoshanna

I have been deriving a sick fascination from watching the whole ripe empire go up in flames. I know it's horrible when something bad happens to someone, especially when they are driven and creative and passionate and have good politics, but that's part of what fascinates me: watching what happens when idealists have to confront the rest of the world. Usually they tend to be the ones who snap back the farthest. Anyway, it's just a good drama, although I feel bad for them as people and am sorry I never got to eat at family supper and stuff. Check out Willamette Week and Food Dude for shameless gossip.

Speaking of idealists snapping in the other direction, I joined a gym. I don't care how much of a ripoff it is, I am totally juiced on it. (And anyway I got a fairly good deal.) When I was justifying it to myself by saying I'd stop buying so many magazines and clothes and lattes, I realized why I like it so much: It's a way to indulge in pop culture that isn't totally destructive. Seriously, being at the gym is like being at a nightclub, a complete spectacle. That's why some people hate them, but that's part of why I like them. That, and step aerobics.

Oh and speaking of gossip, and lattes, there is a new coffeeshop on NE Killingsworth and, what, 28th? It's called Extracto and they have Stumptown coffee and it is run by these people Christopher and Celeste. You may recognize Christopher, he used to be in Pond. I wasn't around for Pond, so I didn't recognize him. Also they have Baker and Spice pastries. And wifi.
