EARLY IN THE GAME

Twice in my life I've been acknowledged from the stage of a show. Once it was midsong, my last name, melodic and rhythmic as it be, woven into the chorus.The other time was unspoken. The person who was there with me that night knows exactly what I'm talking about (as do the 2 or 3 others to whom I bragged/blabbed about it.)

This past week, it happened two more times. First, thanks to Hakeem for acknowledging my divine aura. Second, thanks to the Higher Lows, the two original riffers who were good enough to dedicate their version of "Kerosene" to me, even though they promised "Me and Charlie Talkin'." (btw, did anyone else notice Miranda trying to physically prevent herself from sneering as Carrie Underwood stole that CMT award from her?)

In a better world, next year it'll be Danielle Peck doing the sneering, because that song is totally about the abuses in the Catholic church, don't you think?

Oh, and let me explain. I don't want to hear Pharrell rap. I definitely don't want to hear him sing. And having interviewed him plenty, I don't want to hear him opine. What I do want, though, is to hear him chemically reduce the act of rapping back to mere rhythmic speaking, some too-cool chilly pimp shit (hi Slick Pulla!). And this, it seems, it what's he's learning to do. Plus, it's pure autobiography - in ethic, in style and in content. Lifestyle onomatopoeia.

(n.b. - I was totes planning on blogging today. Ask Sean.)

Finally, if I told you I'd heard a Jurassic 5 song that wasn't terrible...well, let's not have that conversation. All I'm saying is:
